The Manager of Training and Education for the NIH/American Heart Association (AHA) Tobacco Regulation and Addiction Center (A-TRAC) and Atrial Fibrillation Strategically Focused Research Network (AF SFRN) virtual fellowship programs leads the ongoing curriculum design, implementation, improvement, and evaluation of longitudinal online professional development programming for emerging researchers at multiple sites throughout the United States through the virtual research fellowships.

  • The NIH/AHA A-TRAC NIH 2U54HL120163 virtual fellowship is responsible for the career development of new- and early-stage investigators associated with the A-TRAC Center, which provides scientific data relevant to the regulatory authority of the Food and Drug Administration Center for Tobacco Products. The integrative theme of the Center is to evaluate the cardiovascular effects of tobacco products, within the scientific domains of Health Effects and Toxicity.
  • The AHA AF SFRN virtual fellowship accelerates alignment and teamworks across Centers and Disciplines to train the next generation of translational atrial fibrillation scientists.
  • The AHA Summer Undergraduate Research Experience (SURE) fellowship provides a mentored, 10- to 12-week summer research experience for at least three students from ethnic and racial groups that are under-represented in science

Among other responsibilities, the Manager of Training & Education for these 3 virtual fellowships will:

  1. Handle the development of the program curricula and proficiencies for evaluation
  2. Work with course presenters/facilitators to ensure that their presentations incorporate adult learning and experiential activities.
  3. Supervise mentoring and research challenges faced by early career scientists and identify potential resources and strategies to assist
  4. Coordinate online and face-to-face training seminars, including orchestrating ongoing innovation in curriculum delivery
  5. Facilitate professional development opportunities for researchers
  6. Collaborate on informative research, including program evaluation, manuscript, and MedEdPORTAL writing and submissions.
  7. Lead the recruitment and selection process for new fellows
  8. Lead all reporting and reimbursements for education core, including progress reports
  9. Assist fellows in being accountable for abstract, manuscript, and grant timelines and submissions
  10. Assist in manuscript and grant writing

The position is grant funded.

Required Skills

A Bachelor’s degree with 5-8 years of experience, or a Master’s with 3-5 years of experience.

The successful candidate will be:

  • An excellent oral and written communicator
  • Effective at interfacing with senior scientists to design experiential program modules
  • Able to recruit and support diverse early stage investigators and undergraduates
  • Highly motivated, exceptionally organized, and able to move projects forward independently
  • Able to juggle multiple projects and priorities simultaneously
  • An innovative, out-of-the-box thinker
  • An ability to design experiential curriculum adherent to adult learning theory
  • Ability to provide fellows feedback about communication skills and accountability for timelines and scholarly productivity
  • Calm under pressure
  • Experienced with and/or interested in developing qualitative and quantitative research skills
  • Manage virtual informative technology including video conferencing
