WBUR, Boston’s NPR news station, is a mission-driven non-profit media company that produces news and information to serve the public and keep democracy running. We have a loyal following with more than 875,000 monthly radio listeners in Boston and 9 million on NPR stations nationwide, plus millions more consumers online and in podcasts.

We’re looking for a marketing star who is passionate about journalism and will help get the word out about new and existing WBUR offerings to current and prospective audiences. This role will be a pivotal player in helping to tell the world about WBUR's journalism as it appears, regardless of platform.

This is a newly created opportunity for a skilled marketer. The Marketing Manager is responsible for growing WBUR audiences by developing, executing and communicating strategies and plans. This role is hands on and cross-functional, requiring regular communication with various departments across the station. On any given day, you may be defining program positioning and messaging, coming up with and executing a marketing plan for a national program, developing content marketing for a local news series or collaborating with editorial, fundraising/underwriting, community engagement and other departments to help them reach current and prospective audiences. The ideal candidate will thrive in a fast-paced, mission driven media company, be highly collaborative with a can do attitude when it comes to both strategic and tactical executions.

Required Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree and 8+ years of experience in product marketing, with a legacy of successful growth, creativity and collaboration
  • Create and amplify brand work across channels with an overarching goal to grow audience and ultimately revenue. Support key strategies and implement tactics for initiatives on-air, online, on demand (podcasts) and in person (live events).
  • Develop marketing plans: Communicate distinct value proposition and competitive positioning for a wide range of WBUR programs and services using data, research, market knowledge, audience insights and creativity. Implement resulting marketing campaigns from conception through execution.
  • Be creative and efficient with inbound marketing using a variety of tools: Coordinate and execute social media engagement initiatives alongside newsroom social media managers. Plan and implement paid social campaigns (experience with Facebook Ads and Google Adwords desirable). Stay on top of new opportunities to leverage digital, email and social (Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, Twitter, etc.) to increase content consumption, engage advocates and influencers and grow audience.
  • Identify opportunities, provide counsel and support to departments across the station on issues related to audience development, and help to infuse journalistic endeavors with digital, social and promotional thinking to reach as many consumers as possible.
  • Draft plans, write copy and manage content for a variety of B2B and B2C marketing campaigns. Strong copywriting skills required.
  • Oversee campaign-related efforts such as but not limited to: Project manage development of marketing collateral; traffic ads for print, OOH, digital campaigns (Google DFP knowledge a plus); coordination with PR agency, advertising agency, graphic designers and other key vendors.
