Job Description:

The Department of Anthropology at the University of Massachusetts Amherst seeks to hire a scholar at the Assistant Professor level for Fall 2019 with specialization in the study of language and culture in relation to medicine, illness and health. The Department is seeking a broadly trained linguistic/cultural anthropologist whose research and teaching can complement our growing program in medical anthropology and global health. The successful candidate will have evidence of experience in one or more of the following areas: the analysis of linguistic interaction and discourse in the construction of illness narratives and diagnosis; healer-patient interaction, the sociocultural and communicative aspects of pain, suffering, and care; language and power; the intersection of health disparities and racio-linguistic ideologies; and the role of language as it impacts access to care in the globalizing health care industry. In addition to these areas of specialization, the ideal candidate will value and encourage research and teaching across the subdisciplines of anthropology, and show evidence of success in sponsored research and publications.

The courseload is 2/2 and will include both introductory large lecture courses as well as advanced graduate and undergraduate seminars. PhD in Anthropology or closely related field required at the time of appointment.
