Director, Center for Teaching and Learning

The Director of the Center for Teaching and Learning provides leadership and vision for the continuous improvement of teaching and learning at Georgia College. The individual is directly responsible for developing strategies, services, and support for faculty and staff for effective teaching practices and student success. The Director is expected to facilitate collaborative initiatives with academic and support units across campus that foster best practices in teaching and learning. Creating and pursuing an agenda that supports pedagogical research and scholarship, and overseeing faculty development programming that advances Georgia College’s liberal arts mission are two other key areas of responsibility.

The Director of the Center for Teaching and Learning will focus on achieving the goals for the Center, especially regarding instructional technology and faculty development. Areas of responsibility include, but are not limited to: Integration of new and existing technologies in teaching and learning; Quality Matters, instructional technology support; instructional design support; scholarship of teaching and learning; undergraduate research; faculty development sessions, faculty awards; small grant research funding; Affordable Learning Georgia and open educational resources; and new faculty orientation. Assumes additional responsibilities and duties assigned by the Senior Associate Provost for Academic Affairs. Provides supervision of the Center for Teaching and Learning staff.

The key functions associated with this opportunity are:

Directing

• Facilitate new initiatives and encourage collaborations among the various curricular and co-curricular programs that support effective teaching and learning on campus through a variety of instructional modalities.
• Promote a campus culture that values and recognizes the importance of teaching excellence and student learning.
• Collaborates with faculty, academic units, University Senate leadership, academic leaders, and committees on quality improvement processes that enhance the design and planning of curricula, courses, learning environments, and faculty development.
• Provide leadership and planning for all instructional and curricular development activities designed to support Georgia College’s teaching community.
• Promote inclusive excellence in teaching and the infusion of diversity into the curriculum/classroom.
• Identify opportunities for attracting funding to support learning and teaching initiatives and work collaboratively with other organizations to further learning and teaching developments.
• Collaborate with GC Information Technology staff and the Library digital media and information literacy staff to reach Center objectives.

Program Development

• Facilitate and support campus collaborations in the scholarship of teaching and learning.
• Collaborates with the Academic Coordinating Council Advisory Committee members and any subcommittee members to address recommendations for faculty development, program design and delivery, and student support.
Experienced with teaching face-to-face, blended and online courses. Stays abreast of literature on teaching and learning and network with national groups and individuals, including the USG.
• Maintains expertise in the knowledge of trends in higher education, innovations, research, and best practices for using technology to improve learning outcomes.
Demonstrates expertise working with multiple computer platforms including Windows/Mac devices and mobile devices.
• Demonstrates expertise working with system-level and campus-wide course/learning management and delivery tools.
• Promotes faculty use Universal Design for Learning principles.
• Promotes online course compliance with federal regulations and requirements regarding multi-state reciprocity agreements.
• Fosters innovations in teaching that enhance learning outcomes.

Administration

• Develops the CTL mission and strategic plan and updates as appropriate.
• Manage the departmental budget, ensuring cost-effective management of the unit. Supervise professional, technical, and support staff within the unit.
• Analyzes and assesses outcomes for all Center for Teaching and Learning Programs each semester. Aggregates data for an annual report.
• Maintain knowledge of developments in learning and teaching nationally and internationally and where appropriate to these developments through contributions to conferences, workshops, publications etc.
• Evaluate and review the capacity and capability of the Center in order to ensure that it is fit for purpose in meeting the future strategic needs of the University.
• Provides oversight for all communications related to the Center and services offered.
• Represents the University at a range of external groups in relation to the development of effective learning and teaching approaches.
• Coaches and develops others and provides professional development support. Develops talent with both the individual and organizational needs in mind.
• Develops a culture of accountability, provides the team with strategic direction, prioritization and support to achieve results.

Minimum Experience/Education

• An earned doctorate within an academic discipline, faculty status upon appointment will be considered.
• A minimum of 3+ years of successful full time administrative and management level experience that includes staff supervision (hiring and annual reviews), and budget management.
• Evidence of excellent teaching in higher education (e.g., portfolio, teaching evaluations, etc…).
• Proven organizational skills including the ability to be flexible, creative and able to work collaboratively with others – specifically students, faculty and staff.
• A track record of engaging with a diverse set of stakeholders and colleagues to craft a common vision and direction.
• Evidence of current educational research.
• Experience in delivering professional development training.
• Experience in overseeing and implementation of budgets.
