The Department of Pediatrics is seeking a Division Manager to provide strategic direction for the administrative and clinical related functions for the Division of Gastroenterology. The Division currently has over 30+ faculty and 20+ staff. The Division's work advances the treatment of pediatric gastrointestinal and liver disorders through the coordinated efforts of its patient care, research and educational activities. We are a recognized leader in clinical and translational research aimed at exploring the molecular and genetic origins of conditions ranging from GI infections to transplant rejection, and transforming our findings into the most advanced diagnostics, drug therapies and procedures available today.

The Division Manager has a challenging and rewarding job working with an exceptional group of faculty and staff in a dynamic and friendly work environment. The Division Manager oversees and manages financial and administrative affairs for the Division and ensures that University, School, LPCH, and department business standards and objectives are met. Assist and advise the Division Chief. Ensures compliance in all functional areas (i.e., Finance, Human Resources, Research Administration, Clinical Administration, Facilities, Health & Safety, Education & Student Affairs, and Faculty Affairs) with applicable School, University, Federal, State, Local, agency, and Hospital/Clinic policies, procedures, laws, etc. Responsible for achieving the goals of both the Department and the Division through effective long-range planning, program development and administration; policy formulation; financial management; supervision of administrative staff; human resources management including health and safety compliance; and space and facilities management. The duties of this position are typically split between 70% operational and 30% strategic. Typically responsible for operating budgets of $10 M.

Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Direct staff and provide leadership to achieve goals and vision of the division and the day-to-day operations. Responsible for hiring and retaining staff, career coaching, personal development for direct reports and accountable for the performance of employees.
  • Establish and manage clinical programs which may include outreach agreements and recruiting for new faculty, clinical educators, and instructors. Provide financial leadership to clinical programs to maximize clinical profitability. May establish measuring systems and tools to determine productivity of outreach agreements.
  • Partner with Chief and Director of Finance and Clinical Operations in working with Hospital(s) and Clinics in development of business and program planning; participate in the negotiation of and monitor funds flow and productivity targets. Recommend and develop strategies for clinical cost accounting, revenue management and productivity reporting.
  • Represent the division's needs in regard to research, clinical and service facilities, may negotiate on behalf of the unit's current and future needs with the school and hospital(s)/clinic administration.
  • Develop business plans and infrastructure to support research and teaching. Provide analysis and review of multi-year plans, including providing alternative methods for achieving goals when necessary.
  • Oversee and/or manage the finances across all sources for the annual budget cycle, including developing, monitoring, analyzing forecasting and reporting. Coordinate with the hospital(s) budgeting process, negotiate funds flow agreements. May negotiate funding with the hospital(s) for programmatic needs along with the Director of Finance and Clinical Operations.
  • Make recommendations for changes in staffing, facilities, health and safety compliance, finance, technology and/or administrative functions. Work with the DFA, Chief, Chair and /or Dean's Office regarding resources to support faculty activities and interests.

  • Advanced degree in Public Health, Public Policy or related program preferred.
  • Experience with developing strategic plans and policy development desired.
  • Experience with program outreach, developing community partnership and/or relations desired.


    Bachelor's degree and three years of experience in administrative and financial management, or a combination of education and relevant experience.

  • Demonstrated leadership and supervisory skills including conflict resolution.
  • Excellent planning and organizational skills.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Strong financial expertise in accounting, budget planning and financial forecasting.
  • Strong expertise in grants and contract administration.
  • Strong negotiation and interpersonal skills.

  • Strong knowledge of industry standards and/or regulatory requirements.

  • Constantly perform desk-based computer tasks.
  • Frequently sitting.
  • Occasionally stand/walk, writing by hand, use a telephone, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh 11-20 pounds.
  • Rarely sort/file paperwork or parts, rarely twist/bend/stoop/squat.
