Position Description: The University of Chicago's Department of Pathology is recruiting a junior faculty member for its Transfusion Medicine Section. The section is responsible for transfusion services of adult and pediatric patients, a hospital-based blood donor center, and therapeutic apheresis as well as cellular collections. An expanded Emergency Room and a Level 1 Trauma Center are opening in early 2018. The candidate is expected to work closely with providers in hematology, oncology, stem cell transplantation, neurology, obstetrics, cardiothoracic and trauma surgery; offer medical oversight to all medical, technical and regulatory processes and procedures including quality assurance; promote and provide leadership for process improvement and blood utilization; and be actively involved in training of medical students, pathology residents, and transfusion medicine and other fellows. The University of Chicago has 811 pediatric and adult in-patient beds, will open a Level 1 trauma center in 2018, and currently transfuses over 35,000 components and performs 1100 pheresis procedures annually.

Experience in diagnostic coagulation is strongly preferred as is a research interest in the broadly defined field of transfusion medicine. Candidates must be board certified or eligible in Blood Banking / Transfusion Medicine through the American Board of Pathology. Applicants must have an M.D., M.D./Ph.D., or foreign equivalent degree and must possess or be eligible for an unrestricted medical license in the State of Illinois.
