Overview

To provide expertise and leadership in power supply and electromagnetic engineering as applicable to magnetic confinement research devices at PPPL and other collaborating fusion research institutions.

Responsibilities

  • To play a lead role in the design, commissioning and operation of power supplies associated with magnetic confinement research devices including the use of existing facilities, upgrades to existing facilities, and the construction of new facilities for new projects. This includes high current, high voltage, multi-MW AC/DC converter systems and associated equipment such as power cabling, DC bus bar, control systems, and protection systems, as well as the integration with experimental fusion research devices such as tokamaks and stellerators.
  • Planning, development, coordination, and execution of important tasks as Cognizant Individual.
  • Technical oversight, performance, reliability and configuration of assigned PPPL subsystem as Responsible Engineer including both design and operational aspects.
  • Institutional service as Technical Authority (subject matter expert) on assigned engineering topical area.
  • Identification of resource needs and the supervision of professionals and technicians who assist on Cognizant Engineer tasks and Responsible Engineer equipment scope.


Qualifications

Master of Science or PhD in Electrical Engineering (MSEE)



Minimum 10 years of experience in one or more of the following areas:


  • Design and operation of high current, high voltage, multi-MW AC/DC converter power supplies using modern power electronics technology, including both line-commutated thyristor converters and fast switching power amplifiers
  • Application of power supply systems to tokamak or stellerator magnet coils and/or plasma heating systems (RF or Neutral Beam Injection) including feedback control and protection systems
  • Integrated design and operation of tokamak or stellerator electrical/electromagnetic systems, including magnet coils and power supplies, to achieve prescribed magnetic fields while accounting for transient behavior including fault conditions
  • Power systems and electrostatic/electromagnetic analysis using software such as PSCAD, EMTP, MATLAB/Simulink/SimPowerSystems, OPERA, ANSYS, etc.
  • Ability to interface effectively with a wide range of scientific and technical personnel, to serve as leader of engineering projects, and to work on all aspects of a project is highly desirable.
