School/Center OverviewCollege Houses brings together undergraduates, faculty, staff, and graduate students to form vibrant residential communities within the larger context of our renowned urban campus. Our mission is to bring the academic life of the classroom into our living spaces. We have roughly 5,600 residents in total, and twelve houses. The architectural styles vary from 24-story modern high-rises with over 800 residents to smaller, 4-story brick Houses with 170 residents. Each House offers countless cultural, academic and recreational events, personal services, and leadership opportunities. DutiesApplication Developer serves as a developer for CHAS web applications built in ColdFusion/Javascript as well as a technical support for CHAS Drupal CMS. Needing a solid understanding of object oriented programming practices, modern web development practice and server-side scripting. Strong knowledge of the JavaScript and object based programming. Understanding of RDBMS and SQL query language. Creates, develops, and deploys applications in both the JavaScript/NodeJS/SQL Server and PHP/MySQL environments. Support existing ColdFusion installation and application base in a virtual environment. Administrates a full development environments with full QA and deployment protocols. Creates documentation supporting development process and redundancy. Design interfaces focusing on the end user’s experience and ease of use. Assists in monitoring, administering and maintaining all systems crucial to CHAS ensuring optimal up time to core constituency. Ensures adherence to SPIA and ISC technical requirements for University IT properties and has partial responsibility for evaluating new software technologies and improving CHAS IT infrastructure where appropriate and cost effective. Determines functional IT requirements for client business processes and may organize, plan and lead projects.
QualificationsA Bachelor’s Degree and 2 years to 3 years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience is required. Command of JavaScript as a full web stack programming language with asynchronous function calls. Understanding of at least one object oriented programming language; a background in ColdFusion, Java and/or PHP5+ preferable. Knowledge of web technologies such as HTML5 and CSS3. Knowledge of MS-SQL and/or SQL Server tools required. Familiarity with command line tools for server maintenance and development. Familiarity with administration and web authoring in Drupal CMS strongly preferred. Experience in an academic computing environment preferred. Strong technical writing; and instructional skills and excellent communication and customer service skills are required. Experience with Penn’s supported applications and networking a plus. Must show an ability to maintain the confidentiality of sensitive materials, to work independently and as part of a team and to simultaneously manage multiple assignments of varying durations. Must demonstrate excellent organizational skills and have a fine attention to details. Knowledge in supporting Mac, Linux and Windows computers and a wide variety of productivity applications is a plus.
