Bowdoin College invites nominations and applications for the position of Dean for Student Affairs. Reporting to Bowdoin College President Clayton Rose, the Dean for Student Affairs is a key member of the College's senior administration. The Dean leads the Division of Student Affairs, whose mission is to guide, support, and challenge students in order that they may attain their full academic and personal potential at Bowdoin and beyond. The division, which is supported by a budget of approximately $10 million, is composed of athletics, advising, career planning, health and wellness, student and residential life, and includes a team of 17 department heads and a divisional team of 135. The next Dean will inherit an outstanding team devoted to leading and enriching campus by working collaboratively and successfully with students, faculty, parents, staff, alumni, and all other constituents.

The Dean must: be an outstanding communicator; provide a strategic vision, informed by national practices, for the education of the whole student; be deeply committed to continuing to foster a diverse and inclusive community and a culture of thoughtful, open, and respectful discourse and debate; be able to lead and inspire a large division; be a strong manager; make and communicate difficult decisions effectively; and be energetic, possess outstanding judgment, and exhibit joy in working with students. A terminal degree is strongly preferred for consideration.

Bowdoin is a highly selective institution committed to the liberal arts since its founding in 1794. Its mission is to immerse students of uncommon promise in an intense full-time education of their minds, exploration of their creative facilities, and development of their social and leadership abilities. Discourse and engagement in society's most pressing issues are central to Bowdoin's preparation of students for the world. Bowdoin's reputation as a preeminent liberal arts college rests on the excellence of its faculty, students, and staff; strong sense of community; and connections to the people, history, and natural beauty of Maine. The 207-acre main campus is located in Brunswick, a town of 20,000 on the Maine coast, twenty-five miles from Portland and 120 miles from Boston. Bowdoin College enrolls approximately 1,825 students representing fifty states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, the US Virgin Islands, and forty-two foreign countries. Students of color account for 32.7 percent of the student body, while 14 percent of students are the first in their families to attend college. Six percent of students are international, and 10.4 percent are from Maine. Almost 90 percent of Bowdoin College students reside on campus.
