Position: Brown Teacher-Scholar Fellow in Biology                                            

Qualifications:

Stetson University invites applications from highly motivated and energetic emergent leaders for the Brown Teacher-Scholar Fellow in Biology for a 12-month residency of up to two (2) academic years. This full-time, non-tenure-track position involves undergraduate teaching, and collaborative research with Stetson faculty and undergraduate students. Candidates with expertise in all areas of biology are encouraged to apply. We especially encourage applications from candidates with expertise in Aquatic Biology (particularly in nutrient dynamics in freshwater systems), or Herpetology (particularly reptile ecology). The Brown Teacher-Scholar Fellow in Biology will be an active participant in and engage in collaborative research with Stetson faculty and students The Fellow will be supported by a Biology Faculty mentor, the Biology department staff and research resources, and the Brown Center for Faculty Innovation and Excellence.

This position is funded by the Cici and Hyatt Brown Teacher-Scholar Fellows Program for one year with an option for a second-year appointment after satisfactory performance.

Applicants must have a Ph.D. in biology and a strong commitment to undergraduate teaching. The successful applicant will demonstrate the ability to engage in collaborative research with faculty and students as well as a strong commitment to innovative teaching. Applications from candidates with experience improving access to higher education for students from underserved populations in science are particularly encouraged.

Responsibilities:  

In keeping with the teacher-scholar model central to the Stetson University’s liberal learning mission, this position involves both teaching and research. Teaching responsibilities include mentored senior research and an introductory biology course with two associated lab sections in the first semester.  In the second semester, the successful candidate will teach an upper division course and laboratory in their area of expertise and mentored senior research.  In the second year, the fellow will maintain a similar teaching load with specific assignments determined in consultation with the department chair. The Fellow will be expected to develop scholarly collaborations with Stetson faculty and students that result in a productive research program throughout the two-year residency. During the summer months, the fellow will have dedicated time to devote to these research activities.

Brown Teacher-Scholar Fellows are expected to participate in professional development programs through the Brown Center for Faculty Innovation and Excellence, which include programs designed to support teaching and course development, career development planning, and other topics. Fellows are also expected to extend and share their expertise as emerging teacher-scholars with Stetson and the broader community. Examples include presenting at local research conferences with students, participating in Stetson’s annual undergraduate research showcase, developing workshops, hosting field days, or other activities that showcase the scholar’s expertise.

The Department:

The Department of Biology (www.stetson.edu/biology) consists of ten full-time faculty members with areas of expertise in molecular biology and ecology, microbiology, neurobiology, developmental biology, evolutionary biology, and aquatic and terrestrial organismal ecology. We emphasize small classes, investigative research in and out of the classroom, and collaborative student-faculty research. The Cici And Hyatt Brown Teacher-scholar Fellows Program:

The Fellows Program is the flagship initiative of the Brown Center for Faculty Innovation and Excellence (www.stetson.edu/other/brown-center), a central resource for promoting faculty vitality and vibrancy to advance learning at Stetson University. The Program prepares future faculty leaders who inspire excellence in learning, teaching, research, and outreach; in turn, Fellows leave inspired to lead. During their residency, Fellows will develop in their role as a teacher-scholar through participation in programs offered by the Brown Center for Faculty Innovation and Excellence.

College of Arts and Sciences:

The Community:

DeLand is a picturesque residential community of 32,000 located 20 miles west of Daytona Beach and 35 miles northeast of Orlando. The area offers extensive cultural as well as recreational activities.
