Position Qualifications - Responsibilities:

Reporting to the Dean of Bagwell College of Education, the chair serves as the academic and administrative leader of the Department of Secondary and Middle Grades Education and is the department representative in all official communications. The chair is expected to collaborate with faculty across the college and with other campus units, school districts, external agencies and as an advocate for the SMGE department, faculty, staff, and students. Typically, the chair teaches one class per year. The position is a 12-month, tenure-track appointment, and the salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience. The position becomes available on July 1, 2019.

Ideal Qualifications:

1.Leadership in building and maintaining collaborative relationships and in sustaining effective communities of practice among ALL faculty, staff and students.
2.Experience advocating for department, faculty, staff, and students.
3.Commitment to mentoring and supporting faculty growth in the areas of teaching, research, and service.
4.Experience in managing budgets, supervising personnel, and strategic planning.
5.Experience providing leadership in curriculum development.
6.Experience supporting/promoting online learning and teaching.
7.Experience supporting faculty in the pursuit and execution of internal and external initiatives and grants.
8.Experience developing and evaluating innovative educator preparation programs and in accreditation.
9.Record of involvement in professional organizations at the state, regional, and/or national/international level.

Required Education - Experience - Skills (Minimum Qualifications):

Required Qualifications:
1.Doctorate in Education or a closely-related field, or the foreign equivalent.

3.Record of progressively more responsible leadership positions in higher education or as a department chair.
4.Sustained record of teaching, supervision, and mentoring; research and creative activity; and professional service.
5.Evidence of promoting diversity, inclusion, social justice, and equity.
6.Effective organizational, interpersonal communication, and technology skills.
7.Minimum of three years of teaching experience in grades 4-12.
8.Qualifications to teach courses in the Department of Secondary and Middle Grades Education.

The Bagwell College of Education (BCOE) is one of the largest and strongest teacher preparation units in the University System of Georgia offering bachelor, master, educational specialist, and doctor of education degree programs. All educator preparation programs are accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) and approved by Georgia’s Professional Standards Commission (PSC). KSU’s Educator Preparation Provider (EPP) is the university’s umbrella organization for preparing educators and includes 11 departments from four colleges all of which collaborate in the design, delivery, approval, and accreditation of all educator preparation programs.

Bagwell College of Education ranked tenth in the SR Education Group’s 2018 Top Online Colleges Report for Colleges offering Master’s degrees in Education. Doctoral degrees in Education offered by the College ranked 4th nationally.

The Department of Secondary and Middle Grades Education offers an undergraduate program in Middle Grades Education and graduate programs (M.A.T., M.Ed., Ed.S., Ed.D.) in various middle and secondary area concentrations. The department offers a BSED in Secondary Education with concentrations in Mathematics and Science. Service courses are also offered to support secondary, elementary, and PK-12 programs. The department faculty are committed to the development of expertise in teaching and learning in collaboration with units across campus and local school districts, including professional development schools. Our programs foster the development of knowledge, skills, and dispositions required of professional learning facilitators who design and implement integrated instructional programs for learners that are developmentally and culturally responsive. The SR Education Group also ranked the master’s degree in Secondary Education 11th nationally.
