Associate Professor or Professor, Departments of Medicine and Epidemiology, College of Health Sciences

The University of California, Irvine Department of Medicine/Division of Hematology-Oncology, and Department of Epidemiology, and the Chao Family Comprehensive Cancer Center seek applicants for a full-time, tenured position at the rank of Associate or Full Professor. Candidates will have a proven track record of a successful research program with an emphasis on cancer control and population science. Candidates with national leadership excellence in cancer research with a disciplinary focus in cancer genetic epidemiology or gene-environment interactions are especially encouraged to apply. The candidate will also serve as the Associate Director for Population Science and Cancer Control in the Chao Family Comprehensive Cancer Center, UCI’s National Cancer Institute-designate comprehensive cancer center.

Applicants should have an outstanding record of research excellence as evidenced by the ability to obtain and sustain independent or collaborative extramural NIH-type funding, and evidence of excellent teaching and mentoring. A doctoral degree (e.g. MD, or PhD in epidemiology or a population-health related field) is required. The successful applicant will be expected to conduct large-scale, collaborative and transdisciplinary research, maintain a strong publication record and have expertise that would fill existing gaps and enable a robust cancer control and population sciences research agenda. In addition, the successful applicant will have a track record of leadership and creative thinking in support of a matrix-based academic Cancer Center. Finally, successful applicants will contribute to growing the research and teaching missions within the Departments of Medicine and Epidemiology, and to a broader, interdisciplinary population health initiative with other faculty members and research scientists from the Chao Family Comprehensive Cancer Center, the College of Health Sciences and the larger UC Irvine campus.

Successful candidates will have a sustained record of research and current peer-reviewed funding by NCI (preferred) or its equivalent. Expertise in the causes of cancer and their disparities, specifically through genetic epidemiological studies that integrate the role of genetic, genomic, behavioral, environmental, and lifestyle factors in cancer control and population health is paramount. Successful candidates will also have the following:

• A substantial peer-reviewed publication record
• National recognition in areas of population health and cancer control
• A demonstrated ability to lead highly interactive and multidisciplinary research teams
• Demonstrated success translating scientific discovery into new research directions applicable to populations at risk for cancer
• Knowledge/appreciation of the value of population health-related research and education and the capability to help integrate research into the community and clinical enterprises
• Experience working within an academic cancer center
• A collaborative style that fosters and supports teamwork and innovation

As Associate Director for Population Science and Cancer Control in the Chao Family Comprehensive Cancer Center (CFCCC), the incumbent will be responsible for overseeing and coordinating population science cancer research across the entire UC Irvine enterprise. Specific responsibilities include:
• Serving as a member of the Cancer Center’s Associate Director team and the Senior Leadership Council (SLC), which formulate and enact major policies and procedures for the Cancer Center.
• Providing leadership and primary coordination of all population science portions of the CFCCC Cancer Center Support Grant and its corresponding presentation and review elements. This includes writing/editing for annual progress reports and competing renewals (every five years) including shared responsibilities for sections on Senior Leadership, Cancer Control Program, Biobehavioral Shared Resource, Community Outreach and Engagement, and other sections as requested by the Cancer Center Director, along with overall responsibility for presenting cancer population science before our External Advisory Board (annually) and the NCI site visit team (every five years).
• Overseeing the CFCCC’s population science Shared Resource (core facility; the Biobehavioral Shared Resource), with the director of this core reporting to the Associate Director.
• Partnering with the Cancer Center Director and leadership of the Cancer Control Program and the Associate Director for Cancer Health Disparities & Community Engagement to increase the overall portfolio of cancer-relevant population science research.
• Teaming with Cancer Center leadership toward increasing and enhancing the overall cancer translational research initiatives bridging across the population/basic/clinical spectrum.
• Serving as an intramural reviewer on Cancer Center-funded pilot projects, and supporting the Cancer Center Director in oversight and mentorship on awarded projects.
