Overview

The Department of Music is seeking a half-time Audio Engineer to fill a newly created, term position on a 10-month basis. The individual will report to the Production Manager and, together with the Audio Specialist, provides audio support to concerts, rehearsals, recording sessions, and other events sponsored by the Department of Music.

 

The Department of Music at Princeton provides all students with the opportunity to learn from world renowned composers and musicologists, to take instrumental and vocal lessons in the private studios of top professionals, and to participate in performance courses in chamber music, opera, and vocal ensembles. Students may perform with the Department’s six jazz groups, three choruses, two orchestras, a wind ensemble, a laptop orchestra, a steel drum band, and an African music and dance ensemble. The recent expansion of the Department into the new Lewis Arts complex has provided the opportunity for exciting new musical experiences for our students, and also for the expansion of our production support team.

 

This is a newly created position, and is initially offered on a two-year term with the possibility for renewal at the end of the two years. This is a part time, 10-month position with a comprehensive benefits package. The Audio Engineer works a varied schedule driven by the concert and event schedule of the Department. It is expected that the Audio Engineer is available to work regular evenings and weekends during the academic year.

Responsibilities

Performance and Rehearsal Sound Support

  • Serve as A1 or A2 for Department of Music performances and other events requiring sound reinforcement at venues including but not limited to Taplin Auditorium, Richardson Auditorium, and venues at the new Lewis Arts complex
  • Develop and maintain production paperwork (input lists, stage plots, etc.) for events involving complex audio setups
  • Work load-ins, setups, rehearsals, performances, and load-outs as needed to support concerts and events
  • Work closely with students, faculty, and guest artists to ensure that their audio needs are met in a professional manner that exceeds expectations

Recording

  • Assist Audio Specialist with student and faculty recording sessions
  • Record live performances/recitals as assigned
  • Mixing, mastering, and delivery of recordings to stakeholders in various formats as required

Maintenance and Other

  • Attend weekly production meetings
  • Organize and maintain sound equipment inventory for the production office
  • Oversee borrowing of equipment by other departments as well as faculty, staff, and students
  • Other duties as assigned
Qualifications

 

Essential: 

  • 3-5 years experience in live sound reinforcement and/or recording
  • Broad working knowledge of all aspects of audio production
  • Interest in researching current trends and new developments in sound technology
  • Specialized, hands-on knowledge of audio systems and equipment, including some or all of the following:
    • Consoles: Midas Venice, Avid Venue SC48, Yamaha CL1, CL3, LS9,
    • Recording: Avid ProTools, Magix Sequoia,
    • Networking: Dante and Ravenna networks, AES67 devices
    • QLab, Max, Reaper
    • Crestron control and presentation systems
  • Ability to operate, troubleshoot, and maintain a variety of sound systems and equipment
  • Self-motivated, organized, and detail oriented
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, positive attitude, team player, problem-solving skills
  • Strong understanding of the flow and operation of classical music and jazz concerts
  • Willingness to occasionally take on production roles that are not specifically audio-related
  • Ability to work a schedule that includes long hours, varies from week-to-week, and includes frequent nights and weekends 

Preferred:

  • Bachelor’s degree in audio engineering or related field preferred
  • Familiarity with ArtsVision is a plus
  • Experience working with and/or mentoring students
