I. JOB OVERVIEW

Job Description Summary:

The George Washington University’s Media Relations team seeks an Assistant Director, Media Relations to manage media relations on key issues in the campus community. The Assistant Director, Media Relations will interface with campus media and external media, develop communications strategies, coordinate with university leaders, and serve as a spokesperson for the university. They will manage media relations for several university departments including enrollment and the student experience, safety and security, operations and facilities, government and community relations, and other departments and divisions as designated. The Assistant Director will manage the media relations team relationship with student media. The Assistant Director will also oversee research and metrics for the media relations team. Ideal candidates will have on the record or journalism experience, crisis communications experience, and strong written and verbal communications skills. This position will report to the Executive Director, Media Relations.

Responsibilities include:
Lead, direct and oversee communications strategy and media relations for designated areas including planning, pitching and crisis communications in a fast-paced newsroom style environment.

Conducts research, interviews, and writes talking points, press releases and media advisories for external and campus media. Develops and maintains relationships with key reporters and editors.

Supervises media relations associate and part-time employees.

Communicates and collaborates with university departments in assigned areas to maintain effective communication on campus developments, university events, and safety and security issues.

Serves as a spokesperson for the university. Acts on behalf of Director of Media Relations in his/her absence.

Monitors trends in media and in higher education to keep the communications team knowledgeable of the changing news cycle. Prepares relevant reports, plans and other information necessary for general efficiency of the department and division. Coordinates and assists with media logistics for special events as required.

Edits and proofreads news copy. Arranges for media interviews, news conferences, and media coverage. Manages media inquiries and responses.

Performs other related duties as determined by the Executive Director of Media Relations or Director of Media Relations. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.

Minimum Qualifications:

Qualified candidates will hold a high school diploma/GED plus 4 years of relevant professional experience, or, a Bachelor’s degree or higher in a relevant area of study. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position. Degree requirements may be substituted with an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
