I. DEPARTMENT INFORMATION

Job Description Summary:

The George Washington Cancer Center (https://smhs.gwu.edu/cancercenter/) is currently seeking a Research Associate in the laboratory of Dr. Katherine Chiappinelli, Ph. D. in the Department of Microbiology, Immunology, & Tropical Medicine (https://smhs.gwu.edu/microbiology/) at George Washington University. Dr. Chiappinelli’s laboratory focuses on the epigenetic control of gene expression in cancer, specifically of immune signaling in and from tumor cells. Our goal is to use epigenetic therapies to harness the power of the immune system to fight cancer.

This position independently carries out research/development activities by designing and conducting experiments in a controlled laboratory setting, under general guidance from the Principal Investigator. Using a certain degree of creativity and latitude, the core responsibilities of this position include making detailed observations, analyzing data, and interpreting results. This position compiles results and prepares technical reports and documentation of outcomes. This role is familiar with standard concepts, practices, and procedures within a particular field. Working under general supervision, this position typically reports to a Principal Investigator. Other responsibilities include:

•Maintains laboratory inventory and manages the ordering of supplies.
•Manages equipment maintenance. Trains users in equipment operation and research techniques. Explains and demonstrates technology, equipment capabilities, operations, limitations and outcomes.
•Develops an organizational system to keep track of experimental data generated by all laboratory personnel.
• Performs other work related duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.

Minimum Qualifications:

Qualified candidates will hold a master’s degree and 1 year of experience in a related discipline. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position.

Additional Required Licenses/Certifications/Posting Specific Minimum Qualifications: Preferred Qualifications:

•Familiarity with molecular biology, cell culture and mouse work.
•Ability to follow a set procedure and ability to work independently and troubleshoot.
•Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Graphpad Prism, and Adobe Illustrator.
•Experience in editing of scientific publications and presentations.
•Demonstrated experience managing laboratory experiments and personnel.
