Job Description Summary:

The Biochemistry and Molecular Medicine (BMM) department at the George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences (SMHS) strives to deliver the highest quality of professional education and training, and conduct cutting edge research in the areas of biochemistry, molecular genetics and genomics with a goal to better understand human disease. The department continues to have a long and successful record in training undergraduate, master and graduate students. Research Programs span from cancer biology, hepatobiology, autism, vascular biology, and computational genomics. Unlocking the mysteries of biologic processes at the molecular and genomic level is the common thread connecting all research programs. The overall research in the department continues to connect modern biochemistry and genomic discoveries to translational medicine, leading to a unique multidisciplinary research program in biochemistry and molecular medicine.

A research associate position is available for a highly motivated individual to study the role of HDACS and mRNA splicing in cancer. Duties include:

- Conduct research using experimental techniques including: western blots, DNA gels, cell culture, PCR, Real-Time PCR, protein, RNA, and DNA extractions, sub-cloning, transient and stable transfections, lentiviral and retroviral transductions, cell proliferation assays, as well as migration and invasion assays.

- Assist in preparing laboratory reagents, growing and maintaining cell lines, and preparing DNA, RNA extractions, and performing other laboratory tasks as required by the PI.

- Participate in collaborative laboratory research projects and laboratory meetings as required. S/he will also maintain laboratory notebooks, compile data/results for publications and progress reports.

-Serve as the PI’s point of contact for procurement; interface with department administrative staff, and oversee PI’s lab facilities and supplies

-Performs other duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.

Minimum Qualifications:

Qualified candidates will hold a master’s degree and 1 year of experience in a related discipline. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position.

The candidate should have at least a Master’s degree in a relevant discipline of biological sciences and prior experience in basic cell and molecular biology methods, preferably in cell culture techniques and assays and 1+ years experience in the use of cell and molecular biology lab techniques pertaining to cancer research.
