I. JOB OVERVIEW

Job Description Summary:

The School of Medicine and Health Sciences (SMHS) at the George Washington University is currently seeking an Executive Director of Development. Reporting directly to the Associate Dean and Associate Vice President for Development and Alumni Relations, the Executive Director’s primary responsibilities include:

Supervises a growing team of professionals to include gift officers, annual giving, special philanthropy, and data management supporting grateful patient philanthropy.

Responsible for setting individual performance objectives; monitors performance against goals using GW’s prospect management system; conducts annual performance reviews; recruits and trains new major gift officers and support staff as necessary.

Manages staff oversight committee of academic and clinical leadership to monitor continued progress against goals.

Advises Dean, AVP, and leadership of clinical partners on development communications, prospect strategies for School of Medicine and Health Sciences (SMHS). Assists in setting vision for philanthropic support of SMHS and its clinical partners by developing written case statements/campaign plans to include appropriate funding opportunities for advancing that vision.

Manages a portfolio of major and principal gift prospects for SMHS. In concert with Dean, academic leadership, department chairs and faculty, identifies, cultivates and solicits gifts from individuals, foundations, corporations, and other private sources in support of SMHS priorities.

Coordinates with Executive Director, SMHS Development, and Alumni Relations, in developing priorities and gift opportunities to appeal to alumni and patients alike.

Performs other duties as assigned, including special projects. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning additional duties that are logically related to the position.

Minimum Qualifications:

Qualified candidates will hold a Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate area of specialization plus 8 years of relevant professional experience, or, a Master’s degree or higher in a relevant area of study plus 6 years of relevant professional experience. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position. Degree requirements may be substituted with an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Additional Required Licenses/Certifications/Posting Specific Minimum Qualifications: Preferred Qualifications:

-A minimum of Bachelor’s degree, preferably with graduate education.

-8+ years development experience, including major gift experience, preferred.

-Development experience in a medical school or hospital setting highly preferred.

-Experience in medical or healthcare setting preferred.

-Experience in the cultivation and solicitation of major gifts.

-Strong communication skills, to include verbal and written abilities.

-Strong organizational and administrative skills, detail and “big picture”.

-Ability to handle multiple demands.

-Willingness and ability to travel.

-Must be flexible regarding work schedule.
