I. DEPARTMENT INFORMATION

Job Description Summary:

The Erik A. Rodriguez laboratory seeks a post doctoral scientist for a project titled “Tools to Image and Treat Cancer.” The research group works on a broad range of projects, including evolving unique biophysical properties in fluorescent proteins, cellular and cancer fluorescence imaging, creation of unique genetically encoded proteins that utilize exogenous chemicals, and developing tools to image disease in humans (https://blogs.gwu.edu/erik_rodriguez/).

This position is primarily a temporary/training position in which the incumbent plays a substantive role in planning and conducting research by designing and conducting experiments in a controlled laboratory setting. In collaboration with the Principal Investigator, this role will participate in the planning of independent research, will analyze and interpret data, will publish results, will represent the university at conferences and meetings, and may develop new theories and methodologies. This position may also help the Principal Investigator to lead and direct the work of lower level research staff. This role performs work under the supervision of experienced researchers.The position will report to Dr. Erik Rodriguez.

Duties:

  • Employ molecular biology techniques to evolve and characterize fluorescent proteins and biosensors.
  • Purify fluorescent proteins, synthesize fluorescent protein nanoparticles, and image cancer cells in cell culture.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.
Minimum Qualifications:

Qualified candidates will hold a PhD in a related discipline. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position.

Additional Required Licenses/Certifications/Posting Specific Minimum Qualifications: Preferred Qualifications:

PhD in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Bioengineering, Biophysics, or related field.

Experience in a biochemical laboratory and scientific writing. Skills should include molecular biology, subcloning, DNA assembly, DNA purification, Oligo design, gel electrophoresis, protein biochemistry, protein evolution, lentiviral or other viral expression and purification, cell culture, and fluorescence imaging. The candidate also needs strong written and verbal skills to disseminate results through presentations and publications.
