The Cockrell School of Engineering at The University of Texas at Austin seeks an experienced and visionary academic leader with a distinguished record of research for the position of Chair of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE). ECE is the largest department in the Cockrell School, with over 1500 undergraduate and 600 graduate students, as well 60 full-time faculty and 20 part-time faculty with expertise in a broad range of emerging and traditional areas in electrical and computer engineering. The Chair of Electrical and Computer Engineering is expected to advance the department’s mission by attracting and mentoring the highest quality faculty, expanding and broadening the Department’s core and interdisciplinary research activities, initiating innovative educational programs both at the undergraduate and graduate levels, and fostering new collaborations both on campus, for instance with the new Dell Medical School, and with industry partners.

ECE is one of seven departments within the Cockrell School, which is among the largest schools/colleges on the UT Austin campus. Cockrell consistently ranks among the top 10 engineering schools in the U.S. The mission of the School is threefold: to educate future engineering leaders who will think creatively, work collaboratively, and push technological boundaries; to develop innovative solutions through groundbreaking research; and to use the School’s entrepreneurial ecosystem and partnerships with industry to improve lives around the world by translating research into practice. Cockrell has 280 faculty and enrolls approximately 7,700 students in nine undergraduate majors and 13 graduate degree programs. The department chair will be a member of the leadership team for the Cockrell School and will have an important role in implementing its vision for excellence. Qualifications:

Requirements for this position include a Ph.D. degree in electrical and computer engineering or in a related area, with demonstrated leadership experience and an active research program in electrical and computer engineering. The successful applicant is expected to have an outstanding record of scholarly and technological contributions to the field, and should bring proven administrative skills in a U.S.-based organization such as a research university, a major laboratory, a corporate R&D enterprise, or a funding agency. Qualified candidates will have the academic credentials to be appointed as a full professor with tenure.
