The Dell Medical School at the University of Texas at Austin, Dell Children’s Medical Center of Central Texas (DCMCCT), and Capitol Anesthesiology Association are seeking an accomplished leader for the role of Chief of Pediatric Cardiac Anesthesia. Under the direction of Dr. Charles Fraser Jr., Dell Children’s Medical Center and Dell Medical School are launching the Texas Center for Pediatric and Congenital Heart Disease. The Chief of Pediatric Cardiac Anesthesia will play a vital leadership role in creating this groundbreaking new program.

Candidates will possess experience in caring for children with complex congenital and acquired heart disease and adults with congenital heart disease. Qualified candidates should also have prior leadership experience in a top-tier pediatric cardiac surgery program including significant academic contributions to the specialty of pediatric cardiac anesthesiology. Primary responsibilities will include oversight and provision of direct care to patients prior to, during, and after cardiac surgery. Other responsibilities include developing and implementing care protocols, overseeing the QI registries pertinent to Pediatric Cardiac Anesthesia and to oversee education, quality assurance and ongoing performance improvement initiatives. Candidates will also participate in coordinated outreach efforts for the Center.

A successful candidate will have an appointment within the Department of Surgery and Perioperative Care at Dell Medical School and regular participation in educational activities with medical students and residents will be expected. Opportunities for collaboration with medical and adjunct specialties will be encouraged to allow for the pursuit of innovative program development and clinical research initiatives.

Candidates will be board certified by the American Board of Anesthesiology in Anesthesia and Pediatric Anesthesia with additional formal training in Pediatric Cardiac Anesthesia and echo cardiography.

DCMCCT, a member of Ascension Texas and the Seton Healthcare Family, is a tertiary children’s hospital with 248-beds serving 46-counties that includes 24 pediatric critical care beds and 22 pediatric intermediate care beds in a mixed PICU/PCICU unit and a robust ECMO program. There are approximately 1,800 admissions to the ICU annually. It is the only freestanding pediatric facility in the region with a level 1 pediatric trauma center, level 4 epilepsy center and level 4 neonatal intensive care unit.

  • Medical degree from an accredited medical school.
  • Meets applicable credentialing and privileging standards for his/her specialty. Currently Board certified.
  • Unrestricted license to practice medicine in the State of Texas (or the ability to obtain prior to appointment).
  • Demonstrated leadership, clinical teaching, evaluation, and communication skills.
  • Ability to influence/motivate others at all professional and administrative levels.
  • Must be an innovative self-starter with a commitment to excellence.
  • Must possess tenacity, self-motivation and initiative necessary to drive the development and maintenance of established and new programs.
  • A track record of being able to lead, direct, and influence a team (regardless of reporting lines). Demonstrates behaviors of a team player.
  • Eligible for appointment as an associate professor or higher in the Department of Surgery and Perioperative Care.
