The available courses are as follows:

AFC 101 - Introduction to African American Studies (03)
This course is an introductory examination of the African American experience. It acquaints students with the trends, issues and forces that have shaped that experience, and considers the concepts of cultural adaptation, institutional development, and group self-definition. It also surveys the contemporary status and condition of African Americans.

AFC 244 - Dimensions of Racism
This course examines various theoretical approaches to the concepts of race, ethnicity, and diversity. This course offers the opportunity to acquire an understanding of the interrelated dynamics that diversity of people, culture, religious beliefs, and ideologies play in the creation of new nations; how they can determine political and/or economic alliances; how they can shape or reshape the global order; and how they can influence systems of exclusion and produce practices of intolerance.

AFC 301 - Research Methods in Africology & African American Studies
This course provides an intensive exposure to research methods in Africology and African American studies, and offers an opportunity for primary research in the field.

AFC 601 - Theory and Analytical Methods in Africology
This course examines the historical and intellectual roots of Afrocentricity as well as the most prominent paradigms in the discipline; it encourages the applicability of the theory through its cognitive, structural, and functional dimensions; it fosters a critical thinking methodology to sharpen students' skills as critics, theoreticians, and researchers to examine the agency of African people and/or interpret the African world experience transnationally and trans-generationally.

AFC 602 - Researching Black Communities
Through the application of qualitative and ethnographic techniques, students will study groups, institutions and other social phenomena that affect African American communities and culture. Social research will be linked to intellectual and theoretical traditions in the field of African American studies.

Teaching may include a number of particular obligations which employees are expected to fulfill, including but not limited to: meeting with students during and outside of assigned classes, assessing student work and performance, preparing syllabi and course materials, providing copies of syllabi and course materials to their supervisor on request, and assigning and submitting grades in accordance with established Eastern Michigan University schedules.

A Ph.D. in Africology/African American Studies or a cognate discipline. ABD or doctoral students of Africology/African American Studies or a cognate discipline are strongly encouraged to apply.
