General Summary

The Chemistry Department at Eastern Michigan University invites applications for a tenure-track, 8-month Assistant Professor position beginning August 2019.

The candidate is expected to contribute to teaching organic chemistry at the introductory and advanced levels and may have the opportunity to develop upper-level courses in their area of expertise. The applicant is expected to establish a competitive research program involving undergraduate and M.S. students and to pursue extramural funding.

The Department of Chemistry is ACS-accredited with 20 tenured or tenure-track faculty actively engaged in externally funded research involving undergraduate and graduate students. The department enrolls undergraduates in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Fermentation Science, and Chemistry Secondary Education, and graduate students in the Master of Science of Chemistry. The department supports interdisciplinary programs in Environmental Science and Neuroscience. Additional collaborative opportunities may be available with science faculty in the departments of Biology, Polymers & Coatings, Mathematics, Physics & Astronomy, and Geography & Geology. The department is housed in the newly renovated and expanded Mark Jefferson Science Complex. Principal Duties and Responsibilities

Teach contractual load of undergraduate and graduate courses as assigned by the department or school.

Assign and submit grades in accordance with established University schedules.

Keep posted office hours during the week which are scheduled at times most beneficial to students.

Provide academic advising to students, if applicable.

Serve on search committees for hiring of new faculty members, departmental committees and other service committees across the university.

Participate in activities such as student registration, orientation, convocations and commencements.

Attend and participate in scheduled departmental meetings and functions.

Provide other support service to the department, college and/or university, if applicable.

Engage in pursuits that enable them to remain current in their respective disciplines.

Engage in pursuits that help to further organize and contribute to growth of the body of knowledge in their respective disciplines, and/or to explore interdisciplinary implications.

Perform related Departmental duties as required.

This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between EMU and the EMU Chapter of the American Association of University Professors, which contains and settles all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours and other terms and conditions of employment.

Qualifications

A Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry or a related field is required; postdoctoral experience is highly desired. Evidence of the ability to teach organic and general chemistry courses and to develop an active and ongoing research program with undergraduate and M.S. students should be provided. Candidates with demonstrated success in working with diverse populations of students are encouraged to apply.
