The Boston University School of Social Work (BUSSW) currently invites applications for the position of Full Professor and Associate Dean of Research as part of the School’s efforts to further deepen its commitment to address significant social issues domestically and globally,

As one of the nation’s top schools of social work, BUSSW is dedicated to the pursuit of excellence in education, research, and evidence-based practice to advance social and economic justice and solve the most pressing societal problems of the 21st century.

The full professor position includes a 50% appointment as associate dean of research offering the individual 50% time to engage in their grant-funded research or a combination of research and graduate (MSW and/or PhD) teaching. The position start date is July 1, 2019.

The School is distinguished by its vision to advance a just society that promotes the health and empowerment of all oppressed groups, and by its mission to develop dynamic and diverse social work practitioners, leaders, and scholars in a multicultural environment. We believe deeply that the cultural and social diversity of our faculty, staff, and students is vitally important to the distinction and excellence of our research and academic programs. To that end, we are especially eager to have join our ranks a colleague who supports our institutional commitment to ensuring BU is inclusive, equitable, diverse, and a place where all constituents can thrive.

The candidate will join a School that has a strong commitment to expand and grow its research enterprise. The ideal candidate should therefore have a passion and vision for strengthening:

  • research mentorship, collaboration, and teamwork within the School, and
  • interdisciplinary research partnerships with the other BU Schools (e.g., Public Health, Medicine, Education, Rehabilitation Sciences, Arts and Sciences) and institutions nationally and globally.

The candidate will join a dynamic school with an extensive research portfolio and supporting alumni. The School has surpassed its initial capital campaign goal of $20 million and now aims to reach $30 million. Reporting directly to the Dean, the Associate Dean of Research will work closely with the directors of the Center for Innovation in Social Work and Health (CISWH) (http://www.bu.edu/ciswh/), an endowed research center, and the Center for Aging & Disability Education & Research (CADER) (http://www.bu.edu/cader/) to enhance the Centers capacity to promote social work leadership in health delivery and workforce development.

The Difference Is Our DNA

What compelled the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to award Boston University a grant to fight newborn mortality in Zambia? Why did Martin Luther King, Jr. adopt BU as a place where he could hone his message of justice and equality? And what is the catalyst that prompts 32,557 students from 135 countries to call BU their home every semester? It’s in our DNA: an inherent desire in each of our students, faculty, and staff to vigorously and dauntlessly pursue knowledge—and embrace the unlimited possibilities that come with it.

A Community Unlike Any Other

As you can see below, it takes people, ideas, and a little luck (Boston, you’re our town) to make BU what it is today: one of the most dynamic universities in the world.

Celebrated thinkers: On any given day, students will find themselves mesmerized by Nobel Prize winners, a poet laureate, and the first biomedical engineer ever to receive a MacArthur Foundation “Genius Award,” among others.

Extraordinary teaching: When a classroom starts to percolate with new ideas, it’s because our faculty of scholars and accomplished practitioners know how to ignite students’ imaginations. That’s why we reward our best teachers with BU’s most prestigious honor: The Metcalf Cup and Prize.

Groundbreaking research: With faculty dedicated to a creative, interdisciplinary approach to problem solving, BU has become a leading global research institution—propelled forward by over $350 million a year in sponsored program revenue.

World-class students: Elite students from all 50 states and 135 countries pursue higher education on BU campuses in Boston and at programs in L.A., D.C., and more than 30 other cities on six continents.

A city within a city: Today, 80% of our undergrads live on campus, which could explain the 525 student activity groups alone.

The greatest college town in the world: Boston. ’Nuff said.
