The School of Humanities and Communication (HCOM), housing a unique multidisciplinary B.A. program in Humanities and Communication, seeks an Assistant Professor of Legal Studies and Civic Engagement to teach lower and upper division courses. Typical teaching responsibilities are 12 credits per semester.

HCOM prepares a diverse group of students, many from historically underserved communities, for leadership in a multicultural society and is committed to inclusive excellence, innovation in interdisciplinary teaching and learning, quality scholarship, as well as collaborative and imaginative program development. HCOM values an educational environment of cultural and linguistic diversity and gender equity, ethical reflection and practice, and a commitment to working across disciplinary boundaries. The curriculum prepares students to be ethical, creative, and critical thinkers and doers in a multicultural and interconnected global society. Toward that end, through its degree programs, HCOM offers students a comprehensive, interdisciplinary humanities and liberal arts education for the 21st century.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Ph.D. in any Humanities or Social Science discipline or interdisciplinary area, with research and teaching interests focused on Legal Studies, by the time of appointment
  • Demonstrated ability to support teaching and learning needs in one or more areas including law in society, legal ethics, media and law, communication and the law, deliberative democracy, and/or civic learning and engagement
  • Demonstrated experience with service learning and/or other community-based research, teaching or community oriented projects involving students
  • A commitment to working with colleagues and students across a range of disciplinary areas in an interdisciplinary program
  • Evidence of using inclusive pedagogies in teaching and learning
  • Demonstrated teaching experience and ability to work with an ethnically and linguistically diverse campus community, including students, faculty and staff
  • Demonstrated teaching, advising, and/or mentoring experience working with first generation students
Preferred Qualifications
  • J.D. degree
  • Pre-law advising and/or curriculum development experience
  • Experience mentoring students for internships
  • Experience mentoring students with undergraduate research
  • Professional experience in multilingual/multicultural contexts
