As part of the primary care treatment team, identifies, triages and manages patients with health and behavioral health problems. Works closely with physicians, other providers and staff to recommend, develop, implement and evaluate treatment plans with specific focus on behavioral interventions and be part of the healthcare, research and evaluation team.

Description of Duties

Commonly performed duties include:
•Provides billable psychotherapy to individuals, couples, and families.
•Performance of targeted assessment and evaluation, including diagnostic impressions and functional status focused on the presenting problem.
•Timely and succinct feedback to Physicians and providers regarding consultation findings and recommendations.
•Concise and timely documentation in the patient’s medical record.
•Triaging and referring patients to specialty mental health care when appropriate.
•Formulation of behavioral health interventions appropriate to the healthcare care setting, and assisting with implementation of treatment plans.
•Providing brief follow-up, including relapse-prevention education.
•Develops, teaches, and/or provides oversight for classes that promote education and skill-building to enhance psychological and physical health for patients families, and learners
•Provides on-going consultation services for a sub-set of patients who require on-going monitoring and follow-up (i.e., continuity consultations).
•Shares knowledge with other team members and patients, both formally and informally respecting HIPAA at all times.
•Works as an interprofessional team member to develop specific clinical pathways or best practice programs for targeted patient groups (e.g., patients with acute stress symptoms and PTSD, obesity, diabetes, geriatrics etc.).
•Uses electronic health records, and appropriate coding skills for billing purposes.
•Other duties as related to the scope of the job.

Supervision Received

Supervision will be provided by attending physician or other designee with licensure compliance and peer supervision.

Supervision Given

May supervise assigned support staff if needed.

Required Education

•Master’s degree, PsyD or PhD in a mental health related field (Marriage and Family Therapy, Counseling psychology, clinical social work, clinical psychology) from an accredited University.
•Bilingual (Spanish – English).

Licenses/Certifications

Full clinical licensure to practice independently in Texas, as an LCSW, LMFT, LPC, CP or associate of any of these licenses is required.

Required Experience

Experience as required for licensure related to the duties performed. This experience can include training during coursework in goal oriented behavioral therapies or experience in related medical settings.

Preferred Experience

Experience working in medical / primary care settings. Previous clinical work experience in terms of clients / patients served, type of clinical issues applicant has served (anxiety, depression, addiction, couples etc.,), samples of documentation skills (clinical notes). Interested in and/or have experience with brief interventions, team-based care, a wide variety of psychiatric, substance abuse and behavioral medicine problems, and diverse populations.

Equipment

Use of standard office equipment (Computer, electronic medical records, laptop).

Working Conditions

Needs to be able to successfully perform all required duties. Need to be able to work in an outpatient primary care setting. Some travel and weekend work is required.

Other

Good inter-personal skills that will effectively function for a primary care team member providing brief 15- to 30-minute interventions for a wide variety of behavioral issues in patients of all ages.

A New University with a Long History

The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley was created by the Texas Legislature in 2013 in a historic move that brings together the resources and assets of UT Brownsville and UT Pan American and, for the first time, makes it possible for residents of the Rio Grande Valley to benefit from the Permanent University Fund—a public endowment contributing support to the University of Texas System and the Texas A&M University System.

 

Our new university will also be home to a School of Medicine and will transform Texas and the nation by becoming a leader in student success, teaching, research, and health care. UTRGV will enroll its first class in the fall of 2015, and the School of Medicine will open in 2016.

 

UT Brownsville and UT Pan American

The shared history of The University of Texas Pan American and The University of Texas at Brownsville goes back to 1927, when Edinburg College was founded. In 1973, Pan American opened a second campus in Brownsville, which later became an independent institution of The University of Texas System in 1991. Over the years, the missions and the identities of these great institutions have continually evolved to serve the communities of the Rio Grande Valley.

Now, the evolution and connection between these two institutions is coming full circle as UT Brownsville and UT Pan American are being established as a single, new university and medical school, with a single, new identity—The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley.
