General Summary of Position:
The University of Massachusetts Lowell (UML) is seeking applications to a tenure track position at the rank of Assistant Professor in the School of Criminology and Justice Studies (SCJS). The appointment is expected to begin in fall, 2019.
Applicants should have strong statistical skills, an initial record of peer-reviewed publications that demonstrates the capacity to produce high quality scholarship, and a clearly articulated research agenda with the potential to generate external research funding. Candidates must be able to teach core statistical and data analysis courses at both the undergraduate and graduate (masters and doctorate) levels, along with courses in criminology and criminal justice.
We are particularly interested in candidates with sampling and computational expertise in the identification and/or estimation of hard-to-reach populations of both offenders and victims. Candidates with experience in statistical modeling and simulation techniques, network analysis, and/or geo-analytics are encouraged to apply.
A Ph.D. degree in Criminology, Criminal Justice, or a related social science field is required. A Ph.D. in Statistics will also be considered for those applicants with research experience in criminal and/or juvenile justice. A Juris Doctorate (J.D.) degree is not sufficient. Current ABD candidates are encouraged to apply, although the Ph.D. degree must be in hand by appointment date. Recommendation letters for ABD candidates should specifically address when the candidate is expected to defend his or her dissertation.

The SCJS is housed within the University’s College of Fine Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences (FAHSS). The College is the largest unit of the University, with 11 academic departments and over 180 full time faculty. FAHSS has experienced significant growth in recent years, including hiring over 50 new faculty members, achieving a 70% growth in funded research expenditures, and the addition of several new interdisciplinary graduate programs.
The SCJS enrolls over 600 undergraduates who major in Criminal Justice, with an additional 140 Criminal Justice master’s students, and approximately 40 doctoral students. The School offers an undergraduate degree (Bachelor of Science) in criminal justice, a master’s degree in criminal justice (Master of Arts), a master’s degree in security studies (Master of Arts or Master of Science), five graduate certificate programs, and a doctoral degree in Criminology and Criminal Justice. Our nationally ranked Ph.D. program has two tracks: Track 1 - Criminology and Criminal Justice and Track 2 - Criminology and Criminal Justice with a concentration in the study of terrorism. The School is also home to UML’s Legal Studies program.
The SCJS currently has 21 tenure track faculty members, 5 full-time teaching professors, 3 visiting positions, and 18 adjunct faculty members. Faculty members specialize in a wide range of scholarly topic areas, including victimology, policing, institutional and community corrections, biosocial criminology, organized crime, terrorism, violence, the classification, treatment and control of sex offenders, criminal justice technology, and a variety of global justice issues. Faculty members have expertise in quantitative, qualitative, and mixed methods research, with a high level of scholarly output. Externally funded research by the SCJS faculty is currently supported by several million dollars in grants from major funding agencies. The School’s faculty collaborate and partner with local, state, and federal criminal justice agencies, while also working in partnership with other faculty and organizations globally. Additionally, the SCJS is home to four high profile academic journals: Crime & Delinquency, Victims & Offenders, Democracy & Security, and Perspectives on Terrorism.

Minimum Qualifications (Required):
- Ph.D. degree in Criminology, Criminal Justice, or any related social science field
- Ph.D. in Statistics will also be considered for those applicants with research experience in criminal and/or juvenile justice
- Evidence of strong statistical skills and expertise in the identification and/or estimation of hard-to-reach populations
- Ability to teach core statistics and data analysis courses in the SCJS at both the undergraduate and graduate (masters and doctorate) levels
- The ability to work effectively with diverse groups
- An initial record of publications in ranked criminology and criminal justice journals that demonstrates the capacity to produce high quality scholarship
- A research agenda with the potential to produce externally-funded research opportunities
- Record of excellence in teaching
- Ability to teach substantive courses in criminal justice and criminology
- Relevant professional experience beyond academe
- Experience with research grant proposals and funded programs
