The Department of Medicine (DOM) is the largest clinical department in Boston University Medical Group (BUMG) and Boston Medical Center, consisting of 325 clinical faculty (MDs and NPPs) and 100 PhD faculty. DOM has an annual operating budget of $120M that includes $40M for clinical services. 90% of DOM budget expenses are spent on salaries and fringe for faculty and staff. The faculty in the department secured $122 m in new research grants in the 2018 academic year.

Reporting to the Chair of the Department of Medicine, the Vice Chair of Finance and Administration is responsible for directing a wide variety of administrative processes, fiscal operations, revenue cycle, research systems human resource management, regulatory compliance, and administrative infrastructure within the Department of Medicine. The Vice Chair of Finance and Administration collaborates with Boston University School of Medicine (BUSM), Boston Medical Center (BMC) and Boston University Medical Group (BUMG) leadership to evaluate, plan, implement and monitor process improvements, departmental performance, and achievement of the departmental goals. They are responsible for creating, fostering, and reinforcing a culture of timely, responsive, competent and accurate administrative services in support the department’s core mission of clinical care, education, and research.

The Vice Chair of Finance and Administration has a team of 20 direct reports, including the Section Administrative Directors, Associate Director of Finance, Director of Revenue Cycle, Director of Research Administration and Business Administrator.

• Bachelors required, Masters preferred
• Experience in an academic medical center, particularly with clinical revenue cycle and sponsored research award management experience
• At least five years’ experience managing finances of at least a $50M million organization with a proven record of growth and accomplishment and a keen understanding of and experience with academic healthcare systems and in clinical practice management and faculty and staff compensation models
• Proven track record and evidence designing rigorous financial analyses, projections, and scenarios with a strategic orientation
• A creative problem solver and service orientation are important, particularly in human resource management, fiscal operations, budgeting, and modeling in an academic setting
• Demonstrated ability to convert strategic initiatives into business plans with detailed implementation and measurement plans
• Ability to develop and motivate a diverse group of professionals through empowerment, creative leadership and team building
• Strong affinity for the tripartite missions of patient care, education and research in a large research-intensive department of medicine in a safety net clinical setting
• Experience in developing and overseeing a diverse staff is desirable
