Occupational Summary

Conduct a variety of complex and independent investigations in the planning, development and implementation of original experimental procedures within the overall scope of a research project at Duke University.

Work Performed
  • Evaluate and interpret collected data, through observation, and prepare reports and analyses setting forth progress, adverse trends and appropriate recommendations or conclusions.
  • Understanding anatomy and physiology for animal procedures, with the knowledge to independently troubleshoot issues that arise (ex. Clotted lines, hypoxia, various surgical procedures).
  • Confer with principal investigator in developing plans for research projects and discuss the interpretation of results and the preparation of scientific manuscripts for publication. This position will also be responsible for the development of IACUC Protocols, as well as budget preparation of future projects.
  • Determine necessity and set up instruments, material and apparatus and operate complex laboratory equipment required for specific tests.
  • Obtain, prepare, mount and stain tissue, blood and other substances for microscopic examination.
  • Provide maintenance of departmental wide instrument inventory for use in research/educational labs, and drugs required for said projects/labs (controlled substances included).
  • Prepare culture media, chemicals, reagents and solutions.
  • Maintain sufficient inventory of material, supplies, and equipment for performance of duties; clean and maintain complex laboratory equipment.
  • Oversee maintenance of departmental equipment (ex. Anesthesia machines, C-arm, CPB machines).
  • Review scientific journals, abstracts and other literature for information applicable to current and pending research projects, and assisting in preparation of data for publication in medical journals.
  • Provide technical guidance, instruction and consultation to faculty, student researchers and to other staff members as required.

Education

Work requires an educational background generally equivalent to high school plus two years of college course work in a relevant science field.

Experience

Work requires six years of progressive experience in a research laboratory to acquire skills in the planning, development and implementation of original experimental procedures and techniques. OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
