To support the Carey Business School's strategic objectives, Carey seeks a dynamic, highly collaborative and strategic Assistant Dean of Teaching and Learning.

The Teaching and Learning team at the Carey Business School supports faculty development and student learning along multiple dimensions:
  • Supports full-time and part-time Carey faculty development by promoting excellence in teaching;
  • Provides leading-edge instructional design and technologies to support online and onsite instruction, via professional staff and complementary vendor support;
  • Advances Carey's strategy and vision for assurance of learning, including the assessment and evaluation initiatives of continuous improvement of student outcomes across delivery platforms (face-to-face, blended, and online);
  • Fosters and supports a collegial academic environment that enriches the faculty teaching role and the student experience

    The Assistant Dean will directly supervise the Director of Teaching & Learning and one or two other individual contributors, and oversee a professional staff (currently, approximately fifteen). This position reports to the Vice Dean for Faculty & Research, and coordinates with the Vice Dean for Education on various activities, particularly related to online course delivery. The Assistant Dean will also work closely with designated faculty in designing teacher training programs, ranging from new faculty who recently completed their PhD to executives with no teaching experience who wish to engage in the classroom.

    The Assistant Dean will advise Carey faculty on research-based practices in teaching, strategically engaging with the School's full-time as well as part-time faculty (e.g., faculty orientation, workshops, and classroom observations), and developing resources on teaching pedagogy and the scholarship of teaching and learning. This position provides key leadership for innovation and collaboration with existing and new vendor partnerships.

    Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
    A. Strategic Leadership and Planning (45%)
  • Formulates and implements strategies for instructional development, delivery, technology, and support through collaborative efforts with faculty, staff, academic programs, and other Carey constituencies.
  • Advances Carey's assessment and evaluation of student outcomes for continuous improvement.
  • Provides leadership for T&L to advance educational initiatives to promote and enhance student learning.
  • Participates in on-going strategic assessment and planning, ensuring T&L provides high quality programs in alignment with University, School, faculty, and student needs, the instructional goals and objectives of the Carey School, and the needs of higher education in general.
  • Provide programming that both meets faculty needs (teacher- and instruction-centered) and that focuses on assisting faculty in deepening student learning. Works with faculty on class observations for instructional development, teacher training, and other initiatives.
  • Advocates for best practices in teaching and learning, promoting a model of fellowship between faculty and students, academic excellence, and scholarship in teaching and learning.
  • Promotes full-time/part-time faculty community through shared professional learning opportunities.
  • Seeks opportunities for external and internal funding for T&L projects and programs.
  • Serves as advisor to Carey and JHU community on teaching and learning topics and initiatives.
  • Serves as an active member of relevant JHU committees or working groups, as needed.
  • Together with the Director of T&L, the Vice Dean for Faculty, and the Vice Dean for Education, provides oversight to T&L staff in their role managing the School's relationship with Carey's external partner in providing online educational services.
  • Collaborates with other Carey units including Student Services, Academic Programs, Advising, Admissions, Marketing and other groups on initiatives that promote and enhance student learning

    B. Professional Educational Programming (30%)
  • Develops and maintains effective resources that support faculty in their teaching role.
  • Mentors and consults with individuals and groups of faculty concerning teaching and learning issues including ADA course accessibility.
  • Facilitates the formation and support of Carey faculty instructional learning communities and communities of practice.
  • Develop strategy and implementation plan to create effective programs, maximize resources, and enhance the work of faculty in the education of Carey Business School students.
  • Works in a highly collaborative manner with Carey Business School and JHU offices to ensure that faculty professional education needs are met in a collaborative, professional, and timely manner.
  • In collaboration with the Vice Dean for Faculty, the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, and the Office of Faculty & Research (OFR), plans and delivers mission based onboarding and orientation program for new faculty, both full-time and part-time.

    Performance Management (15%)
  • Hires, trains and leads professional staff.
  • Develops measurable goals for the department and evaluates staff members against those goals.

    Other Responsibilities (10%)
  • Assists Vice Dean for Faculty & Research and Vice Dean for Education with relevant projects as they arise.
  • Other duties as assigned.

    Education & Experience:
    Master's degree in business, instructional design or related field required; terminal degree strongly preferred. Recommended 10 years or more of progressive experience in coordinating higher education (and/or corporate) instructional design-based projects and programs. Additional years of experience may substitute for education to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
  • Evidence of excellent teaching in higher education preferred, whether in a business school or other.
  • Excellence in written and verbal communication, with proven ability to communicate effectively at all organizational levels.
  • Proficiency in contemporary pedagogy in higher education.
  • Knowledge of cognitive science literature as it applies to teaching and learning, curriculum development, course design, teaching methodologies, and assessment of student learning.
  • Appreciation for multiple instructional delivery methods, including face-to-face, blended, and online.
  • Ability to manage external partner arrangements and contracts, including ongoing evaluation of quality and performance.
  • Ability to work effectively as an individual contributor and as a member of collaborative teams, with high degree of professionalism and excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to interact collaboratively with staff in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to build solid working relationships within the School and University, effecting change and innovation in light of resource constraints.
  • Leadership and management experience in prior position(s).
  • Experience developing and implementing training and development programs.
  • Knowledge of the faculty role in higher education, and graduate business education in particular.
  • Commitment to diversity and inclusiveness; demonstrated ability to work effectively with a diverse workforce.
  • Experience working with organizations and individuals in international setting; cross-cultural competence and experience working in a multi-cultural environment.

    During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.

    The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
