Laboratory Assistant 2 (Req. 29346)

Under the direct supervision of the Principal Investigator, serve as lab technician for research laboratory studying the protozoan parasite Toxoplasma gondii. Standard laboratory and data collection procedures established by the lab supervisor are followed. Participation in weekly group lab meetings. Provides coordination and integration of Lab Assistant's tasks into the research objectives of the laboratory. Responsibilities include maintaining cell lines in tissue culture, maintain general lab equipment, order needed supplies for research, oversee and train undergraduate lab helpers and graduate students. In addition, carry out a PI-guided research project studying novel aspects of pathogenesis in Toxoplasma gondii.

  • B.S. Degree in Microbiology, Cell Biology, Biochemistry or related field and (preferred) one year of relevant lab experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience is required.
  • Skill in performing chemical and mathematical calculations.
  • Skill in working independently and following through on assignments.
  • Communication skill (written, oral) to maintain lab protocols, notebooks, and to prepare and make research presentation in lab meetings.
  • Ability to train and oversee part time undergraduate student assistants.
  • Skill in prioritizing assignments to complete work in a timely manner with deadlines, fluctuating workloads, or last minute changes.
  • Ability to maintain an organized laboratory manual.
