Job description

Savannah State University seeks qualified applicants for Head Football Coach.  This position provides leadership and coaching to members of the SSU Football team; ensures players meet academic requirements set by the NCAA and University; handles the athletic recruiting responsibility for the program set by the NCAA and University.  Demonstrates extensive experience and expertise in the application of theories and principles related to the University’s football program; serves as a team leader for the SSU Football program with a purpose to bring leadership with discipline and hard work.   Provides professional services and input which has a direct impact on the functionality of the University’s football program.  Demonstrates effectiveness in monitoring student athletes’ academic progress, retention and graduation; monitors eligibility status and promotes academic progress of student athletes by working closely with Compliance and Student Athlete Academic Services (SAAS). Assists in enforcing academic support services or activities, i.e. study hall, tutoring, academic advising, life skills, etc.  Coordinates all team activities; assists with fundraising activities.  May be directed to perform job related tasks other than those specifically delineated in this description.  Salary commensurate with qualifications and experience; competitive benefits program.


Bachelor’s degree required, Master’s degree preferred.  Must have thorough knowledge and understanding of NCAA rules and regulations; 5-7 years coaching experience at the college level  supplemented by strong communication and organizational skills with the ability to interact with collegiate administration, faculty, staff and students.   A high degree of professional integrity and respect for the values of the University.  Must have previous experience as a lead assistant/coordinator or a head coach at the collegiate level.  Background and/or credit check required.
