TITLE: Associate Vice President of Operations                                                                          

DEPARTMENT:  Finance and Administration                                       

REPORTS TO:     Executive Vice President for Finance and Administration/CFO    




PRINCIPAL PURPOSE OF JOB: This position will ensure the efficient and smooth operation of essential university functions and services, including Financial Aid, Bursar, Auxiliary Services, B.R.E.D.S., Housing and Food Services, Printing, Mailing and Document Services, and Risk Management.

SCOPE OF RESPONSIBILITY: This position involves a great deal of coordination and attention to detail including contract negotiation expertise, determination to see a project through to its completion, and energetic leadership. A significant record of administrative leadership and achievement are critical for establishing credibility and authority for combining these diverse areas under one leadership oversight


  • Lead the development of strategically integrated long-term capital plans including planning and design of major construction, space management, and building development
  • Oversee operational and capital budgets directly related to facilities that lead and drive operational efficiency, productivity, and customer service, with simultaneous attention to expenditures
  • Leverage and oversee department services, equipment, and relationships with external vendors to accomplish strategic and operational objectives, ensuring adherence to university policies, procedures, and applicable regulations
  • Develop, implement, and monitor design standards, energy, efficiency, and sustainability goals and requirements for facilities planning and capital and renovation projects, cost and schedule controls and plan reviews
  • Implement best practices in directing, planning, developing, and delivering services to the university
  • Provide analytical support for critical questions involving potential growth of the campus, space allocation, facility management, program planning, and other needs
  • Create and implement departmental programs and initiatives including key performance metrics to assess effectiveness



  • Ability to identify and connect best practice programs and initiatives to the university's mission and established goals
  • Prior successful oversight of multi-site service departments, including project management and budget management
  • Capable of exceptional design insight
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Commitment to partnering with peers and colleagues, both within the university and externally, to achieve complex goals
  • Actively seek and research new technologies to leverage limited resources
  • Expertise in estimating capital project implementation costs and ability to develop conceptual cost estimates on strategic initiatives
  • Skill in researching and compiling statistical, financial, and other data to validate reasoning for business case
  • Ability to conduct himself/herself at the highest levels of personal and professional integrity and ethical standards at all times
  • Proven ability to coach, lead, develop, and inspire others to achieve their professional best


  • This person does have supervisory responsibilities


  • Work is normally performed in a typical interior/office work environment.
  • No or very limited physical effort required.
  • No or very limited exposure to physical risk.




  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Business Administration, Architecture, or related field
  • A minimum of 10 years of experience in planning, facilities management, development of capital programs, space management, and services for large high-volume/high-use institutions
  • A minimum of five years of experience in leading the operation of a large, diverse, multi-facility organization with responsibility over 500+ staff is preferred
  • Demonstrated experience leading large service operations with a focus on customer service is preferred
  • Measurable evidence of evolving service delivery and improved customer service through implementation of new systems, reorganization, or process improvements, etc. is preferred

Licensing and Certifications           


  • Ability to continuously stand or walk
  • Ability to bend, squat, climb stairs and life frequently
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds occasionally
