Job Description

The College of Education & Human Development, Department of Educator & Leadership Preparation, seeks applicants for a full-time, tenure-track appointment beginning fall, 2019. The appointment is for an Assistant Professor in Bilingual Education and responsibilities include teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in Bilingual and ESL education while working collaboratively with faculty to build a comprehensive educator preparation program supporting diverse populations. The supervision of field-based students and/or student teachers as well as teaching of courses at multiple sites with alternative scheduling is possible. Collaborative work with Program faculty in assessment of Bilingual Education students oral and literate proficiency skills in the areas of speaking, listening, writing and reading. Mentorship and collaboration is essential in addition to the involvement in campus activities and other responsibilities as deemed necessary. Active service and research agenda with publications and conference presentations are necessary as well as practitioner experience in educator preparation and certification. Quality performance will be expected in teaching, student mentorship, community service and active University committee participation. The ideal candidate will have a strong background and teach in bilingual/ESL teacher certification program and graduate- level Bilingual/ ESL program. Particularly, the candidate will be able to integrate Bilingual and English Language principles and theories into core content subjects in Spanish, English and bilingually. The candidate will possess a strong background in the development of literacy for Linguistic diverse students.  The candidate will demonstrate abilities to work collegially and communicate positively and effectively with multiple stakeholders, including those with diverse economic and cultural backgrounds.  The candidate will work collaboratively with program faculty, mentorship, maintaining active research agenda, and service the program, department, university, and community. The candidate will be able to teach courses at undergraduate and graduate level in English, Spanish and bilingually, and is able to teach different course formats (face-to-face, hybrid, and online courses). The candidate vigorously will pursue external funding. Work hours will depend on course and institutional schedules. Teaching may include day, evening, or weekend courses.

Necessary Qualifications:

  • Ph. D. or Ed.D. in Bilingual Education or closely related field (i.e., Curriculum & Instruction with cognates in Bilingual/ESL Education) from a regionally accredited institution 
  • 3 + years of experience of teaching experience in a bilingual setting 
  • EC-6 teaching experience in a bilingual setting 
  • Bilingual teaching certificate (English and Spanish)
  • University teaching and supervisory experience within a field-based program.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with different course deliveries(Face-to-face, hybrid, online)
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) in core content subjects, teaching, and research (science, math, literacy)
  • Experience teaching learners from diverse backgrounds
  • University teaching experience in Foundations of Bilingual Education, Second Language Acquisition and Linguistics for Bilingual Teachers 
  • Experience collaborating with public schools and university departments 
  • Experience in assessing and/or designing Spanish language proficiency and developing/using materials for training
  • Supervision of field-based students
  • Exhibits abilities to work collegially and communicate positively and effectively with multiple stakeholders, including those with diverse economic and cultural backgrounds
  • Research publications and conference presentations with a well- articulate agenda in the area of Bilingual, English as a Second language and/or Bicultural education
  • Ability to work cooperatively with others and provide excellent customer service to students, employees, and the community
