Establishment of Department Pool for Affiliate/Part-Time Instructors of English for High School Upward Bound (HSUB)Qualified applicants will be placed in the departmental pool and will be considered beginning Spring 2016. Instructors are part-time, at-will employees hired to teach on a per clock hour basis and a semester-by-semester basis. High School Upward Bound Instructors provide supplemental instruction in the areas of composition, creative writing, grammar, vocabulary and reading comprehension to pre-enrolled Program participants.

Duties/Responsibilities

Follow Colorado standards-based academic guidelines. Teach specific subject matter to a diverse student population. Help program participants develop competence and confidence simultaneously through a balance of acquiring basic skills and developing conceptual understandings. Provide direct instruction to program participants at the strategic level of intervention in order to supplement core instruction. Provide explicit and systematic instruction to improve students’ specific skills, strategies, and concept development. Work with students of diverse backgrounds who struggle with academic and motivation issues. Employ classroom and behavior management skills.

Affiliate faculty are part-time, at-will employees hired to teach on a per credit hour basis for specific classes, as needed, usually on a semester by semester basis. Affiliate Faculty are not eligible for benefit coverage under the University’s benefit program. All such teaching assignments are dependent on budget and enrollment. An Affiliate faculty member’s duties include: meeting assigned classes or delivering on-line content consistent with University, School, and Department policies; providing instruction in assigned classes consistent with the content and learning objectives of the regular course syllabus and, if appropriate, with Department course coordination policies; being available, either face to face or electronically, to students in assigned classes to provide additional academic support as needed and appropriate for the teaching assignment; and complying with University-wide student evaluation of instruction policies and peer observation policies.

This program is funded through a renewable federal grant.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree and current secondary teaching certification in respective subject area, or related experience on the post-secondary education level.

Preferred Qualifications

Minimum 3 years documented experience working with economically and academically disadvantaged youth.
