The Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences (EAS) at the Metropolitan State University of Denver is seeking affiliate faculty (Category III) to teach courses in Integrated Natural Science I (Physics and Chemistry) and/or Integrated Natural Science II (Biology and Earth Science). Qualified applicants will be placed in the departmental pool and will be considered for affiliate/part-time departmental needs beginning Summer 2017.

Duties/Responsibilities

Qualified applicants will teach Integrated Natural Science I (SCI 2610) and/or Integrated Natural Science II (SCI 2620). SCI 2610 examines the application of fundamental scientific principals of physics and chemistry and is the first in the integrated natural science series. This course examines the nature of energy and matter, their interactions and changes, and the application of fundamental scientific concepts to the study of our natural world. SCI 2620 examines the application of fundamental scientific principals in biology and earth science and is the second in the integrated natural science series. Biological studies include the basic function of cells, genetics, evolution and biodiversity of life, human biology and ecology. Earth systems include the hydrologic and geologic cycle, ecosystem structure and developments, atmospheric processes, terrestrial systems, and the universe. Both courses include a lecture and laboratory component. Additional EAS course information can be found by searching the University Catalog.

The successful candidate will work and interact with a diverse group of students, faculty, and staff and be sensitive to the educational needs of a diverse urban population.

Affiliate faculty are part-time, at-will employees hired to teach on a per credit hour basis for specific classes, as needed, usually on a semester by semester basis. Affiliate faculty are not eligible for benefit coverage under the University’s benefit program. All such teaching assignments are dependent on budget and enrollment. An affiliate faculty member’s duties include: meeting assigned classes or delivering on-line content consistent with university, college/school, and department policies; providing instruction in assigned classes consistent with the content and learning objectives of the regular course syllabus and, if appropriate, with department course coordination policies; being available, either face to face or electronically, to students in assigned classes to provide additional academic support as needed and appropriate for the teaching assignment; and complying with university-wide student evaluation of instruction policies and peer observation policies.

Teaching may also include online, face to face, and hybrid instruction; face-to-face instruction may include day, evening, and weekend as needed.

Required Qualifications

Master’s degree in Chemistry, Physics, Biology, and any EAS related discipline.

Preferred Qualifications

Doctorate and teaching experience.

Experience working with and sensitivity to the needs of a diverse urban student population including (but not limited to) students of color, LBGTQIA students, students from low-income backgrounds, first-generation students,students with disabilities, undocumented students, non-traditional students, student veterans, and English language learners.
