Position Title Student Success Coordinator - Athletics Specialist Position Status Full-Time Position Summary Information

Job Description Summary

Reporting to the Director of Academic Services, the Student Success Coordinator – Athletics Specialist will work in a highly collaborative environment to provide holistic academic support services to all students. A primary responsibility of the individual in this role is to coordinate student-athlete academic progress, however, the Athletics Specialist will also conduct specific outreach to academically at-risk students, provide advising services to undecided students and students in academic transition, and educate all students concerning available academic resources.

Responsibilities

The Student Success Coordinator – Athletics Specialist is responsible for modeling the University Mission through dedicated job performance, service excellence to constituencies, respectful collaboration, and active support of the University’s Mission in Catholic and Lasallian higher education. Other major responsibilities include the following:

-Identify students having academic difficulty through reporting tools; design appropriate interventions to assist students
-Assist students with study skills, communication with faculty, time management skills, and campus engagement opportunities
-Connect students to appropriate campus resources
-Provide comprehensive, holistic academic advising and coaching for undecided students
-Provide professional mentoring and advocacy support to assist identified students in overcoming barriers or obstacles to retention and persistence
-Assist with planning and coordination of program events and activities to support student engagement, enrichment and persistence, including new student orientation programs across all levels, colleges and programs
-Participate in various committees at the University as well as state, regional and national organizations to remain current with trends in student advising, retention and persistence
-Participate in Visit Day and other identified recruitment/retention activities to assist potential students and families
-Provide general assistance for walk-in students
-Plan and implement programs to provide support to targeted groups of students; track those targeted groups progress using identified indicators
-Assist the Senior Associate Vice President for Enrollment Management with the implementation of a comprehensive communication and outreach plan for all (undergraduate, graduate and doctorate) non-registered students each semester

Student-Athlete Advising Responsibilities & Duties
-Oversee the establishment of all continuing eligibility certifications for all intercollegiate student-athletes, in accordance with NCAA and conference regulations, bylaws, and procedural requirements. Areas of oversight include: monitoring GPA used to determine Lewis University satisfactory progress and NCAA Progress Toward Degree; declaration of degree; full-time enrollment status; comparing completed semester hours with academic record in evaluating Progress Toward Degree; entering relevant data into the NCAA Compliance Assistant (CA).
-Serve as a member of the NCAA Certification and Eligibility Committee and collaborate with all members.
-Serve as a member of the Intercollegiate Athletic Advisory Committee and collaborate with all members.
-Coordinate with faculty advisors to manage all student-athlete advising, registration activities, to include course approval, degree audits, monitoring of graduation rates.
-Assist in proctoring examinations.
-Assist with the formulation, development, and implementation of eligibility-related policies and procedures.
-Answer student inquiries and resolve problems related to curriculum and course prerequisites, referring to catalogues, written course descriptions, and other appropriate sources.
-Act as primary liaison with and between various constituencies, to include students, faculty, University academic officials, and the Athletics Department with respect to a wide range of advising issues.
-Meet with prospective student-athletes and families to educate about the Lewis University student-athlete experience, educational opportunities, and university and NCAA policies and requirements.
-Meet with intercollegiate athletic teams periodically. Serve as a liaison with the athletics department staff on academic issues.
-Present periodically at Athletics Department Staff and Compliance Education meetings.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree required with a minimum of five years of experience in higher education working with students in advising, recruitment and/or retention activities. Also required are excellent written and verbal communication skills, relationship building skills, problem solving skills, strong organizational skills with a focus on accurate documentation procedures. Also needed are strong interpersonal skills to interact with a diverse population within and outside the university. Knowledge of NCAA Division II bylaws and experience working with student athletes preferred.
