Job Description Summary   

Florida’s only public university exclusively teaching science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) is looking for exceptional candidates to serve as the Sr. HPC Systems Administrator in the Technology Services Department.

SUMMARY OF POSITION:
The position will monitor the performance of, create accounts for, and manage access to the Ember high-performance computing cluster environment, and will be responsible for performing routine system startup and shutdown procedures, applying patches, and performing updates and upgrades to maintain a stable environment (including performing data back-ups and disaster recovery operations). Lastly, this position will provide assistance in troubleshooting and resolving user/server issues in a timely manner with proper documentation.
This position is also responsible for maintaining Linux and VMWare based systems within the Technology & Support Services team. The position requires specialized knowledge in Linux server operating systems, networking technologies, and hardware platforms. This position is also required to have specialized knowledge of Linux administration in a VMware environment, including experience in shell scripting, as well as OS installation and patch management using automation tools such as Puppet. Furthermore, the position is responsible for the installation and support of platforms and systems on various Linux operating system; such as Nginx, Tomcat, and MySQL and associated middle tier applications.   

Job Description   

RESPONSIBILITIES:

·         Administration of Ember and Linux server systems, including systems running in a VMware virtualized environment.

·         Installation and support of middleware software such as Nginx, Tomcat, and MySQL.

·         Linux OS installation, configuration, monitoring, and patch management.

·         Provide troubleshooting support for escalated problems with operating systems and middle tier environments around supported systems.

·         Establishes or recommends policies and procedures for Linux and Ember system use and services.

·         Assists in the architecture and strategic direction of computing platforms and infrastructure, including overall direction for Linux systems performance and management.

·         Technical leadership for project-based assignments.

·         Working with cross-functional project teams to design and implement highly available solutions.

·         Providing technical documentation to project and operations teams as part of project deliverables.

·         Budget planning and management for the server and storage infrastructure, including tools and training activities.

·         Test software applications and systems.

·         Identify departmental needs and make suggestions regarding technical direction.

·         Implement self-service and automation capabilities for new server deployments using orchestration tools.

·         Manage outages, identify root cause and resolve all server issues within allowed service levels.

·         Work with customers to understand their requirements and provide design and implementation guidance.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

B.S. degree in STEM-related field plus five years of experience managing Linux servers and applications  (OR) an M.S. degree in a STEM-related field plus three years of experience managing Linux servers and applications. Work Experience may be substituted for education

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • M.S. degree in STEM-related field
  • Seven years of experience managing Linux servers and applications (OR) five years of experience managing Linux high-performance computing clusters.
  • Two years of experience in higher education information technology.
  • Two years of experience in higher education information technology
     

Certifications to include:

  • VMWare Certified Professional
  • RedHat Certified Engineer or RedHat Certified Architect

REQUIRED LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS, AND/OR OTHER SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS OF LAW:

  • Must possess a valid driver’s license.
  • This position requires a criminal background check.
  • This position is subject to federal and state privacy regulations.

NORMAL WORK SCHEDULE:  This position is salary exempt.  The normal work schedule is Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m., however, occasional overtime (weekends and evenings) may be required.

TARGET HIRING SALARY:  $75,000 - $80,000, commensurate with experience.
