Responsibilities

Responsible for advising undergraduate and graduate students (both on-campus and online) in the development of academic schedules appropriate for stated educational goals within established guidelines. Works with the Academic Program Specialist in the evaluation of major-specific requirements for current and prospective students and takes a proactive approach to assist in college efforts for retention of students, student success and timely completion of degrees.

Works closely with faculty to support major-specific advising for prospective AA transfer students from all area community/state colleges; works with admissions and recruiting departments as needed to assist in pre-advising of potential and incoming students; collaborates with campus and university staff to participate in academic advising and recruiting events to assist the College.

Assists undergraduate and graduate students in the enrollment and registration process; conducts follow-up with students to ensure proper course registration for timely completion of degree requirements; and works with students on re-enrollment processes. Maintains records and reports contacts made with students.

Participates in trainings necessary to perform duties of an academic advisor. Continues to acquire knowledge of university policies and procedures, improve advising skills by pinpointing key areas of growth, and actively participates in professional development to enhance the advising services provided.

Assists the assistant director in the collection and reporting of data on all advising, retention and student success initiatives for the College of Applied Studies. Performs other duties as required.

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree and two years of experience; or a high school diploma/equivalency and six year or experience.

(Note: or a combination of post high school education and experience equal to six years.

Ability to interpret academic program requirements and provide advice.

Ability to utilize problem solving skills.

Knowledge of applicable computer applications and basic computer functions, including Microsoft Office Suite.

Ability to develop and implement policies, procedures, goals, and objectives.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.

Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.

Helpful

Knowledge of academic resources available to students.

Knowledge of the concepts, principles, and practices of career counseling and development.

Knowledge of and the ability to interpret and apply related federal, state, and local laws, ordinances, rules and regulations.

Knowledge of and the ability to interpret and apply related University policies, principles, and practices.

Anticipated Salary Range

Salary commensurate with education and experience. Department expects to hire in the low to mid 30,000 range.

Pay Plan

This is an A&P (Administrative and Professional) position.

Criminal Background Check

This position requires successful completion of a criminal history background check. The background check will be conducted as authorized and in accordance with University Policy 4-OP-C-7-B11.
