A vital and growing part of FIT's rich educational mix, the School of Graduate Studies provides advanced professional education in seven disciplines closely tied to the College's mission, promotion in the post-baccalaureate study of business, art, fashion and design. The School is dedicated to advancing research in the creative industries and fostering collaboration and a dialogue that links faculty and students to outstanding professionals and practitioners.

The Master of Arts program in Art Market Studies provides students with the knowledge and skills to successfully navigate the global art world. Graduates apply their passion for art and business acumen to a variety of roles-in commercial art galleries, auction houses, art fairs, museums, foundations, online platforms, and art appraisal firms. The first two semesters of the three-semester program feature intensive coursework in subjects ranging from art law to valuation to the history of contemporary art. The program culminates in a flexible and customizable third semester. In addition to a required internship, students may elect to complete an academic thesis or pursue additional business-oriented coursework. The curriculum strives to reflect the realities of the art market today by integrating interdisciplinary studies with practical experience, as well as by adopting an overt focus on contemporary art and a global perspective.

Job Description:

The College reserves the right to select one or more candidates after having been duly reviewed and presented to the President in conformance with the provisions of Article 15 of the Collective Bargaining Agreement.

The School of Graduate Studies seeks a full-time faculty member to join the Art Market Studies Department. It is imperative that the candidate have the ability to teach multiple courses in the MA program. The selected candidate will also have a role in the program's external outreach, including public events and open houses for prospective students, as well as in its admissions process. Given that this role requires close coordination with the department chair, a collaborative approach is essential.

In addition, the School of Graduate Studies is currently in the process of launching certificate programs that will be credit-bearing but not degree-granting. The successful candidate for this position will not only teach in the MA program, but is expected to serve a role in developing and implementing these graduate-level certificate programs as well. Thus a versatile and interdisciplinary outlook is especially desirable.

  • Demonstrate a broad knowledge of global developments in the visual arts and the art market.
  • Demonstrate an ability to work effectively in international settings and to communicate across cultural and linguistic borders.

Instructional Design

  • Design and deliver course content that balances the importance of theory with practical application.
  • Create innovative curriculum, adapting course content to incorporate the most up-to-date developments in the field.

Learning Enrichment

  • Emphasize the value of interdisciplinary teaching and learning
  • Assist students in developing critical thinking, problem solving, and communication skills, as well as critical analysis and thoughtful skepticism.
  • Advise students on their individual research projects as well as their professional development.


  • Engage actively in the discipline through conference attendance/participation, publication, and other professional activities.
  • Demonstrate currency in the visual arts, its markets, and its institutions.
  • Model professional behavior in all interpersonal relationships.


  • Incorporate instructional technology into the delivery of course materials and learning experiences.
  • Utilize appropriate technology to communicate with students and to engage them with the material outside of the classroom.

Candidates will have a PhD in a related field, an established academic profile and teaching experience. They will also have art world experience, having worked for an art organization or business, and will be adept at navigating both the academic and professional spheres. The candidate must have the ability to teach multiple courses in the MA program.

Teaching experience at the graduate level is preferred.
