Provides high profile, uniformed public safety and security services for the University campus and community. Engages in active and regular patrols to assist in providing a safe and secure campus environment.
Status: Full-Time, 12 Month, With Benefits
Work Hours: Rotating shifts, nights, weekends, holidays and overtime as necessary
Minimum Pay: $15.64
Essential and Related Functions
- Performs active and regular patrols (foot, bicycle or vehicle) of all campus areas.
- Provides effective response, investigation and documentation of routine and emergency calls for service, unusual or criminal incidents, medical emergencies, and fire and burglary alarm activations.
- Close and regular surveillance of campus properties, including locking and unlocking buildings according to designated schedules.
- Enforces University rules and regulations.
- Assists with all traffic and parking related responsibilities.
- Acts as a knowledgeable resource to students, staff and visitors to campus. Provides general information such as directions as well as more up to date information about campus events.
- Creates written reports and other documentation as necessary and appropriate (i.e. patrol logs, incident reports, parking surveys, etc.).
- All officers will also be cross-trained to fill the dispatch function when necessary or assigned.
- Actively reaches out to the campus community establishing relationships with students, faculty and staff in order to foster a sense of trust with the public safety function and its officers.

- Plan and Coordinate - Complies with attendance and work hour standards. Makes an effort to communicate scheduled absences and late arrivals to supervisors in advance. Makes an effort to learn and observe quality/safety/cleanliness standards when handling the University resources (e.g., workspace, equipment, tools, etc.).
- Technical Skills - Performs simple and routine work requiring basic skills and functionality, in a timely, thorough and accurate manner. Readily learns new information, practices and selects correct processes from clearly prescribed rules, standards or instruction. Makes an effort to seek advice and clear non-routine problems with senior work group member and/or supervisors.
- Results Focused - Able to change work habits and approach to a particular task. Presents a positive outlook and is willing to devote the time and effort necessary to get the job done well. Able to quickly identify what needs to be done and takes action before being asked or required to do so.
- Communication and Relations - Able to speak and write clearly (within role requirements) to convey messages effectively. Makes an effort to act on all requests independently and recognizes when to escalate issues/ problems to supervisors. Courteous and prompt when listening and responding to requests and requirements.
- Teamwork - Participates willingly towards accomplishing work group goals. Listens carefully and attentively, encourages and accepts other points of view. Demonstrates respect and concerns for thoughts, feelings and rights of others.
Position requires a minimum of a high school diploma or equivalent. Must have valid certification through VA DCJS as a Campus Security Officer, or able to obtain certification within 180 days of hire. Must be able to be recertified as required and maintain valid certification at all times during term of employment. Prior law enforcement or security experience is preferred. Public Safety Office promotes a high degree of reliability, has the ability to maintain confidentiality, and the ability to work independently as well as part of a team. It is critical that the Officer relate well to students, faculty and a diverse community. Applicant should have a working knowledge of computer programs such as email, word processing and basic spreadsheets. Must possess a valid Virginia driver’s license and a good driving history. Must be able to pass an extensive background check.
- Grasping: Applying pressure to an object with the fingers and palm.
- Walking: Moving about on foot to accomplish tasks, particularly for long distances or moving from one work site to another.
- Standing: Remaining upright on the feet, particularly for sustained periods of time.
- Reaching: Extending hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction.
- Pushing: Using upper extremities to press against something with steady force in order to thrust forward, downward or outward.
- Pulling: Using upper extremities to exert force in order to draw, drag, haul or tug objects in a sustained motion.
- Lifting: Raising objects from a lower to a higher position or moving objects horizontally from position to position. This factor is important if it occurs to a considerable degree and requires the substantial use of the upper extremities and back muscles.
- Ability to sit and/or drive for long periods of time
- Medium work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
- The worker is subject to extreme cold: Temperatures typically below 32 degrees for periods of more than one hour. Consideration should be given to the effect of other environmental conditions such as wind and humidity.
- The worker is subject to extreme heat: Temperatures above 100 degrees for periods of more than one hour. Consideration should be given to the effect of other environmental conditions such as wind and humidity.
- Position requires working rotating shifts, nights, weekends and holidays with some overtime hours also required.
- On occasion, some travel (including overnight) may be required for off-campus trainings/conferences.
