GENERAL SUMMARY OF POSITION:

Information Technology at The University of Massachusetts Medical School has a unique opportunity for a Software Engineering Intern to join us at the intersection of technology, innovation, and teamwork. This is a 6 – 12 month internship program.

The Information Technology department at the Center for Healthcare Financing at Charlestown is looking for tech-savvy aspiring software engineering intern with at least a basic knowledge of C#/.Net to join one of our teams. During the internship, we’ll collaborate to leverage technology, software engineering methodologies such as open-source development, and industry best practices to help:

  • Modernize the technology stack and reduce technical debt.
  • Increase efficiency, maintainability, traceability, up-time, and robustness across enterprise applications.
  • Connect with external technical and open-source communities. Communities include local meetups, Hackathons, potential students, industry, and non-profits.
  • Ensure a sustainable software development framework is achieved by the department after the internship. A framework would provide the departments with the ability to continue to improve on projects and products, with minimal cost and overhead.
  •  Together, we’ll apply best practices in software development, dev-ops, IT engineering and agile processes to achieve the departments’ goals. Along the way we’ll consult on how best to both develop a sustainable engineering roadmap of technical excellence that compliments the $1.7b enterprise brand and makes the departments’ products and applications stand out. All this while easily aligning with our institution’s security and privacy posture.

    Responsibilities

    MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Utilize innovative ideas and approaches to assist in the development of working models to serve the needs of our faculty, students and researchers
    • Complete a project from start to finish and write-up and present the work product to the UMass community
    • Participate in team projects
    • Conduct online research
    • Perform other duties as required
    Qualifications

    REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

    • Must be a currently enrolled student in a higher education institution or recent graduate
    • Solid analytical and communication skills
    • Attention to detail with the ability to collect and record information from a wide variety of sources
    • Must be reliable and able to set consistent work hours
    • Proven interest in IT and passion in furthering the mission of UMMS
    • Must have above average academic performance
    Additional Information

    PREFFERED QUALIFICATIONS:

    • Demonstrated experience with software development tools, frameworks, and/or languages (C#/.Net)
    • Preferred experience in software engineering in Microsoft stack
    • Be able to join us for 6 – 12 months
    • Within daily commuting distance of Charlestown, MA.
    • Outstanding communicator who can present information concisely across a variety of media
    • Outstanding listener with an attention to detail
    • Proved experience in open-source projects
    • Familiar with or can quickly learn agile development such as Scrum
    • A developing understanding of current trends and best practices in software engineering
    • Possesses positive attitude and creativity
    • Emerging organizational skills and the ability to handle multiple assignments concurrently
    • Demonstrated experience being innovative, flexible, engaging and empowered throughout the delivery cycle.

    Duration: 6-12 months
