Asst Director Student Advancement
Enhance the experience of undergraduates by helping students develop a robust and meaningful connection to the Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) community through an integrated approach to academic and career/post-graduation planning as well as assisting students with making meaningful experiential education, social and extracurricular connections. As the designated principal staff contact for approximately 90 students per each class cohort of the entering first-year class, and for comparably-sized cohorts of upperclass students (i.e., serving as the primary staff contact for a total of approximately 360 students), follow them through graduation, ensure a successful transition to college and to discipline-specific study in the academic departments. Facilitate registration into courses that maximize the likelihood students will achieve their academic and post-graduate goals; encourage and support successful student-advisor relationships; help students obtain relevant support resources; intervene quickly when a problem arises; introduce students to the resources available to further their goals at CWRU; and help students develop a CWRU experience plan by the end of their second semester.
- Manage a caseload of approximately 360 students from enrollment commitment through graduation. Implement an integrated approach to academic and career/post-graduation planning as well as assisting students with making meaningful experiential education, social and extracurricular connections. Through identification of student needs and a comprehensive working knowledge of all of the undergraduate academic programs, as well as the student support services, experiential learning options, career resources, and mentoring opportunities available at CWRU, determine appropriate services, support, and resources to increase academic readiness, progress, and success. (25%)
- Serve as a resident expert to guide students in specific decisions including the choice and scheduling of courses, selection or change of majors and minors, etc., providing referrals to specific departments, schools, or colleges as appropriate. Foster peer relations and orchestrate programs and activities that engage participants at levels that boost their performance across a variety of educational activities and desired outcomes such as persistence. Facilitate a host of diverse connections to relevant support contacts and resources. Provide guidance and connect students to social and extracurricular activities to enhance their engagement in the campus and surrounding community. (20%)
- Prior to arrival, engage incoming first-year students to discuss fall coursework recommendations and consider future curriculum options and goals. Create, document, and approve a CWRU experience plan including financial, academic, social, and postgraduate plan. Provide individualized pre-registration recommendations that prepare students for the course selection process with their faculty mentor/ advisor, matching coursework to academic, intellectual, and career interests, laying the foundation for students’ academic success. (10%)
- Develop and implement a structured communication protocol based on each circumstance. Engage students, individually and/or in groups, on issues related to planning an academic program, choosing an educational or career goal, and developing a customized four-year CWRU experience plan, which includes curricular, co-curricular, and extra-curricular components. (10%)
- Using a comprehensive and integrated record-keeping platform, document the undergraduate experience and ensure relevant updates reach the appropriate faculty advisors and administrators. Review academic records, monitor and track the retention and progression toward degree completion for all students within their assigned cohort. Provide regular, customized feedback. Provide periodic grade reviews and mid-semester check to review grades; meet with students who are having academic difficulty or who are on academic probation. Intervene, provide support, and develop next steps for students facing academic problems. (10%)
- Utilize student retention and completion data and research to inform decisions regarding student success and advisement. Collaborate with colleagues across CWRU to develop outcomes and plans for continuous improvement and to create an inclusive environment that acknowledges the unique needs of first-year students, including neurodiversity, underrepresented minorities, first-generation, LGBTQ, and international students. (10%)
- Provide post-graduate guidance in determining the best way to help them achieve their career goals whether it be through graduate school or jumping straight into their desired careers. (10%)
Serve on select committees in support of the university’s strategic objectives. (5%)
Department: Regular contact with colleagues (Participate in weekly staff meetings, ongoing training, and occasional retreats) pursuing shared goals and collaborating to achieve immediate operating results and strategic priorities.
University: Daily contact with undergraduate students; regular contact with faculty advisors and mentors and colleagues in undergraduate studies, enrollment management, the student affairs, Kelvin Smith Library, and International Affairs; and occasional contact with college/school leadership.
External: Occasional contact with alumni, parents, and employers representing the university.
Students: Frequent interactions with students to provide coaching/counseling as they navigate complicated issues, helping them to resolve emotional, academic, interpersonal and crisis-level issues related to their university experience.
Experience: 3 years of relevant work experience, preferably in higher education.
Education: Bachelor’s degree required, Master’s degree preferred.

- Requires the ability to relate to and deal with people in situations beyond receiving instructions. Must be adaptable to performing under stress when confronted with an emergency.

Is able to deal with several abstract and concrete variables. Requires the ability to apply principles of rational systems in order to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables.
- Ability to meet consistent attendance. Ability to interact with colleagues, supervisors, and customers face to face.
