Job FieldThe John H. Daniels Faculty of Architecture, Landscape, and Design, University of Toronto, invites applications for Associate Professor in Design and Computation. This is a Contractually Limited Term Appointment of three (3) years, effective July 1, 2018, or as soon as possible thereafter.

Set within a preeminent research university and located at the center of one of North America’s most cosmopolitan cities, the Daniels Faculty uniquely combines the disciplines of architecture, landscape architecture, and urban design in undergraduate, graduate, and professional programs. The Daniels Faculty explores the intersections between nature, technology, architecture, and various built geographies in a way that situates design to meet its contemporary challenges. An emphasis on the connections between all of the design disciplines at work in the remaking of the built environment is apparent in the scholarly research and built work of many of our faculty. Following a decade-long transformation of the school’s faculty and professional programs, and a recent, major increase in its endowment, the Faculty is expanding its undergraduate and graduate programs. To accommodate both growth in its curricular offerings and an increase in its research and outreach programs, a new building complex for the Faculty has just been completed on Toronto’s historic One Spadina Crescent.

We are looking for a candidate with a research agenda in any area at the intersection of design and computation, including but not limited to visualization, simulation, modelling, generative and parametric design, digital fabrication and construction processes and technologies, building information modeling (BIM), and software and hardware development of advanced tools for spatial design and analysis. Candidates should have the capacity to contribute to all design disciplines represented at the Daniels Faculty of Architecture, Landscape, and Design. Candidates must be engaged in research of an international caliber with demonstrated excellence in teaching. A professionally accredited degree in Architecture is required. A degree at the Master’s level, in Architecture, or a related field, is also required. A Ph.D. in architecture, engineering, computer science, or a relevant field, is highly preferred. Candidates with combination of an advanced master’s degree in architecture, or a related field, and an exceptional portfolio of professional work and record of excellence in research may also be considered.

Candidates’ record of excellence in research, must be evident through publications, presentations, exhibitions, and other forms of peer recognition for creative and/or technically-oriented work. Excellence in research should be demonstrated a record of sustained and measurable contributions to and publications in recognized field-relevant journals (or leading publications in the field), an established and continuous record of participation in research projects and networks operating at high, international standards; established record of participation in innovative building or planning-based projects; leadership and organization of, or representation in significant exhibitions; presentations at significant conferences; strong endorsements by referees of international stature; and other honours and awards.

Candidates must have a record of teaching excellence, and a strong demonstrated commitment to contributing to the enrichment of undergraduate and graduate programs at the Daniels Faculty. These would include the Bachelor of Arts, Architectural Studies, Professional Master’s programs in Architecture, Landscape Architecture, and Urban Design and the delivery of a new Ph.D. in Architecture, Landscape, and Design Studies. Excellence in teaching should be demonstrated through teaching accomplishments, a teaching statement, strong teaching evaluations, and a teaching dossier submitted as part of the application, and strong letters of reference. This evidence should include teaching in degree granting programs, ongoing experience in curriculum development; participation in leading successful workshops, seminars or studios; or significant publications and/or presentations related to pedagogical innovation.

The position will include opportunities for the candidate to collaborate with UofT colleagues in Planning/Geography, Art, Environment, Computer Science, Engineering, and Public Health, among others, as well as operational staff, and external academic and industry partners. University of Toronto faculty have access to the Canadian Research Councils, which offer grants and research funding opportunities that are unique within North America.

Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
