 The John H. Daniels Faculty of Architecture, Landscape, and Design, at the University of Toronto, invites applications for a full-time tenure-stream appointment in the History & Theory of Architecture. This appointment will be at the rank of Assistant Professor and will be effective July 1, 2019.

Candidates must demonstrate a perspective on architecture, the city, and more broadly, the built environment that reflects an interplay of diverse ideas, and phenomena in global settings. Expertise in architectural histories beyond the traditional territories of the Western canon is highly desirable. Candidates should show a strong commitment to exploring the relationships that exist between architecture, cities, infrastructure, and various political and institutional frameworks. Candidates must be engaged in research of an international calibre with demonstrated excellence in teaching. A Ph.D in architectural history or a related field is required by the time of appointment, or shortly thereafter. A professional degree in architecture, or a related field, is highly desirable.

Excellence in research should be demonstrated by publications in recognized field-relevant journals (or leading publications in the field), or by leadership in research projects and networks operating at high, international standards, presentations at significant conferences, accolades for innovative research, strong endorsements by referees of international stature, and honours and awards. The successful candidate will be expected to pursue innovative and independent research at the highest international level and to establish an outstanding, competitive, and externally funded research program.

Candidates must have a strong demonstrated commitment to teaching excellence, and will be expected to contribute to the enrichment of undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral programs at the Daniels Faculty. These would include the Bachelor of Arts, Architectural Studies, Professional Masters programs in Architecture, Landscape Architecture, and Urban Design and the delivery of a new PhD in Architecture, Landscape, and Design Studies. Excellence in teaching should be demonstrated through teaching accomplishments, a teaching statement, sample syllabi and course materials, teaching evaluations, and a teaching dossier submitted as part of the application, as well as strong endorsements from referees. This evidence can include performance as a teaching assistant, experience leading successful workshops or seminars, student mentorship, or conference presentations.

The position will include opportunities for the candidate to collaborate with UofT colleagues in Planning/Geography, Art History, History, Environment, Computer Science, Engineering, and Public Health, among others, as well as operational staff, and external academic and non-academic partners. University of Toronto faculty have access to the Canadian Research Councils, which offer grants and research funding opportunities that are unique within North America.

Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Set within a preeminent research university and located at the center of one of North America’s most cosmopolitan cities, the Daniels Faculty uniquely combines the disciplines of architecture, landscape architecture, and urban design in undergraduate, graduate professional, post-professional and doctoral programs. The Daniels Faculty explores the intersections between nature, technology, architecture, and built geographies in a way that situates design to meet its contemporary challenges. An emphasis on the connections between all of the design disciplines at work in the remaking of the built environment is apparent in the scholarly research and built work of many of our faculty. Following a decade-long transformation of the school’s faculty and professional programs, and a recent major increase in its endowment, the Faculty is expanding its undergraduate and graduate programs. To accommodate both growth in its curricular offerings, and an increase in its research and outreach programs, a new building complex for the Faculty has been completed on Toronto’s historic One Spadina Crescent.
