Reporting to the Dean of University College, the Associate Dean for Academic Planning and Enrollment is a member of the founding team of professionals charged with realizing the mission of a new College which will be the formal academic home for approximately 2,500 students who are not yet matriculated into a major in one of the University’s other colleges or schools. In undertaking this responsibility, the Associate Dean will lead a team of professionals in realizing the mission of University College and in making an important contribution to the development and implementation of a range of College and University policies, practices, and activities designed to assist University College students in their transition to University life, their retention, and their successful preparation for, and transition to, a major appropriate to their abilities and interests, and, ultimately, their timely completion of a degree.

The Associate Dean has primary specific responsibility for University College students in regard to: enrollment in appropriate courses; term to term retention; academic exploration of possible majors, and selection of, and transition to, a major that is aligned with a student’s abilities and interests; referral of students to both academic support services and non-academic support services and follow-up and advocacy for students in regard to such services; and careful assessment of student progress and of the programs and policies designed to promote student progress. The Associate Dean plays a significant and important role in the development of effective policies, also has primary responsibility for developing effective collaborations with the University’s other colleges and schools to provide strong academic major discovery programs and to ensure the smooth transition from University College to the college or school of the student’s selected major, as well as collaborative and highly functional relationships with the Division of Student Development and Campus, and other University services.

Qualifications & Requirements

Preferred qualifications for the position include:

  • A master’s degree or a PhD;
  • Substantial administrative experience at the level of associate or assistant dean, or other relevant position, and demonstrated achievements and effectiveness as a manager;
  • Extensive and current knowledge about issues related to undergraduate student success and a profound commitment to improving the educational success of a highly diverse student population;
  • Knowledge of, and enthusiasm for using, data systems to inform program development and evaluation, to track student progress, to provide effective advising tools, and, generally, to inform decision-making and accountability;
  • A personality that lends itself to securing the willing collaboration of faculty and professionals throughout the University and to serving as an advocate for undergraduate students; and
  • Excellent communication skills.
