The Campus Safety Officer is expected to provide for the safety of students, faculty, staff; and to protect/secure University grounds, buildings, and parking facilities against theft, illegal entry, and damage.

Responsibilities include:

  • Enforcing University and parking rules, regulations and laws;
  • Responding to call/complaints involving fire, automobile accidents, disturbances, and emergencies;
  • Citing moving and parking traffic violations; * Directing/controlling traffic in parking facilities;
  • Assisting with disabled vehicles and providing emergency assistance and escort services to students, staff, and visitors;
  • Locking/unlocking all facilities;
  • Securing access to residence halls by monitoring ID card readers or photo identification;
  • Preparing daily log reports on campus activities;
  • Controlling crowds at special events and emergency response situations;
  • Assisting with evacuations during emergency situations;
  • Assisting outside law enforcement agencies in serving warrants on campus; and
  • Assisting visitors in locating their campus destinations.

This position works 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

As essential personnel, Campus Safety Officers must be available to work overtime, staff holidays, and snow days.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Certification or ability to obtain certification from the State of Virginia as Campus Security Officer (http:www.dcjs.virginia.gov/vcss/ocps/)
  • Minimum high school diploma or GED, Bachelor’s degree preferred and familiarity with techniques of criminal investigation, including police report writing.
  • Ability to communicate in the English language by telephone, two-way radio and in person;
  • Ability to exercise judgment and make decisions as to appropriate action in accordance to University rules, regulations, and policies;
  • Ability to work cooperatively and courteously with all segments of the public;
  • Ability to stand or walk for long periods of time;
  • Ability to work effectively both in and outdoors during all weather conditions.

Preferred Qualifications

Previous security, military or public safety experience, especially at a college or university, is preferred.
