Web Communications Specialist

The Web Communications Specialist is part of a Web services team within the Marketing Office and assists with website production and troubleshoots user issues with content management systems. The Web Communications Specialist will research additional content management systems, and will provide training and user support. Assists marketing with integrating print, web, mobile and social media strategies. Works with campus faculty and staff to enhance their web presence. Communicates College guidelines, policies and procedures with respect to web use and design. Works with vendors as needed to enhance FLCC’s web presence.

1. Qualifications:

A. Educational Background: Minimum of a bachelor’s degree in business, communications, marketing, or related field.

B. Experience: Minimum of two years professional experience with web content development, content strategy and social media.

C. Special Skills: Must have skills and experience in:

  1. Writing and editing content
  2. Web content management experience
  3. Web design and Web Technology experience
  4. Marketing/PR/communications experience
Must possess excellent organizational and communication (written and oral) skills, with focus on details. Proficient with Web-based content management systems and Web development tools such as Adobe Creative Cloud and other related software applications. Possess knowledge of Web-based marketing strategies, information architecture and user-friendly design. Familiarity with usability testing, along with an in-depth knowledge of Web design standards and functional design best practices. Ability to troubleshoot user issues with content management systems and demonstrated proficiency in teamwork and problem solving. Experience with content management and web page development in a higher education setting is preferred. Experience working on both PC and Mac system environments required. Familiarity with web content accessibility guidelines (WCAG) preferred.

2. Essential Functions:

WRITING AND EDITING:
  • Write and edit compelling, accurate, and information-rich web content
  • Make timely edits to the Colleges’ website including copy, photography, and multimedia to ensure consistency, accuracy, readability and appropriateness of style
  • Provide support to the Colleges’ departmental liaisons in the areas of web content development and maintenance
  • Solicit, compose, edit, and rewrite copy from clients as needed for consistency with College style and accuracy.
  • Work closely with the Colleges’ faculty and staff to research, develop, write, maintain and enhance their web presence
  • Work with the Marketing team to integrate print, Web, mobile and social media strategies to enrich the user experience

WEB CONTENT MANAGEMENT:

  • Manage content development and write or edit content as needed for FLCC websites and other digital media, including the College Catalog.
  • Produce web pages that are aesthetically pleasing, highly usable, and consistent with the overall website and College branding effort.
  • Familiarity with content management systems. Participate in the selection of a potential future College-wide content management system and provide training and user support as appropriate.
  • Develop, communicate, and enforce College guidelines, policies, and procedures related to the website.
  • Work with third-party vendors and consultants to expand and/or enhance the FLCC web experience.

WEB DESIGN AND WEB TECHNOLOGY:

  • Research, evaluate, and integrate innovative and appropriate web technologies.
  • Stay current with technological advances in the field and recommend new technologies as appropriate.
  • Apply HTML and CSS on large educational/ organizational websites.
  • Manage and perform bug testing of code, specifically of web pages and content management applications across multiple browsers and platforms.
  • Troubleshoot and provide technical support on issues related to web services

MARKETING:

  • Understand and implement key Internet marketing initiatives and provide strategic recommendations to extend the College brand.
  • Work with campus clients to create web presences for the promotion of new College initiatives and target audiences.
  • Assist with special admissions recruitment web communication initiatives as assigned, including research, planning, and project management; writing and/or editing copy; page layout planning; and issues related to navigation for access of new feature.
  • Work closely with members of the Marketing Office on the integration campaigns, traditional publications, and various delivery formats with consistent messaging and tone.

OTHER:

  • Research and interact with outside vendors and consultants as needed.
  • Assume additional duties in the Marketing Department as requested by the Marketing Director.
  • Serve on College committees as requested by the Marketing Director.
  • Supervise student aides in the Marketing Department as appropriate.
  • Assume responsibilities of the Web Services Coordinator when appropriate.

The starting salary is $39,517 and commensurate with experience.

Organization

Finger Lakes Community College was established in 1965 and opened for instruction in 1967. Set on a 250-acre, park-like campus, the College is part of the State University of New York (SUNY) system. It is a public, open access institution dedicated to providing a quality education in a student-centered environment.

Located in the Finger Lakes region near Canandaigua, NY, the College lies in an area known for its beautiful natural surroundings, exquisite fall foliage, Canandaigua Lake, and local wineries. In addition to the main campus, the College provides instruction at its campus centers in Geneva and Newark and at its Muller Conservation Field Station on Honeoye Lake.

Instructional facilities include science and computer laboratories, technology-enhanced classrooms, music-recording and editing studios, a multi-media communications lab, a 900 square-foot television studio and control room, the community’s public access television station, a simulated nursing hospital station, a therapeutic massage lab, drafting rooms, a greenhouse and arboretum, fine arts studios, a music rehearsal hall, a gymnasium, and a spacious library.

Founded: Established in 1965, opened in 1967.

Enrollment: 6,699 full- and part-time students (Fall 2009). The average age of full-time students is approximately 22; part-time, approximately 24. Students from more than 350 different high schools in New York State and across the United States enrolled at FLCC in Fall 2009, along with students from a few other countries.

Graduates: More than fifty-five percent of FLCC students graduate with A.S. or A.A. transfer degrees prepared for further study at four-year institutions. Others graduate with A.A.S. degrees or certificates prepared to obtain employment in their field of study.

Special Opportunities: FLCC offers more than forty academic degree and certificate programs, honors studies, a January Plan and Minimesters, online and hybrid, travel and expedition courses, internships, high school dual-credit programs, non-credit and workforce training offerings, and Adult Basic Education/GED programs. Student Life: Activities for student involvement and networking include the Student Corporation, Phi Theta Kappa and Alpha Beta Gamma honor societies, National Society of Leadership and Success, student publications, theatre productions, art exhibits, musical organizations, lectures, concerts, and special interest clubs.

Intercollegiate Athletics: Finger Lakes sponsors men's baseball, basketball, cross-country, lacrosse, soccer, and track teams, as well as women's basketball, cross-country, softball, soccer, track and volleyball. Men and women participate in a nationally recognized Woodsmen team.
