Overview and Responsibilities

These are part-time employment opportunities for individuals to tutor students needing additional academic assistance in various subject areas.

This is a great opportunity for individuals to obtain leadership skills, develop strong communication skills, applicable job skills, build a resume, and earn extra money. Additional benefits for student tutors include a flexible on-campus employment and reinforcing of knowledge or skills.

Note: There is no guarantee for continued employment from semester to semester due to the unique demands of the student population. Semester work schedules are determined at the beginning of the semester, but may change once student needs are established.

There are several tutor positions available:

PAL (Peer Assisted Learning) Tutor: Provide tutoring services for students on a walk-in basis and 1:1 appointments in an open lab setting within Academic Services (AS). PAL tutors will work alongside faculty at all times. Tutors might assist with walk-in tutoring services outside of their dedicated content area and may be scheduled at the tutor desk to help with Academic Services intake process.

  • Provide basic clerical duties such as: filing, scheduling 1:1 tutoring appointments, and enter Academic Services students into E360 community.
  • Provide 30 or 60 minute 1:1 tutoring appointments.
  • Enter notes into student folders after 1:1 tutoring appointments.
  • Assist Academic Services instructors as needed.
  • Staff tutoring desk, facilitating intake process.
  • Assist students as needed.
  • Monitor Academic Services students.
  • Maintain Academic Services environment.
  • Be knowledgeable of Academic Services processes.
  • Be assigned other duties as needed.

 

Casual Call (CC) PAL Tutor: Provide 1:1 tutoring by appointment only. These tutoring sessions will only be in a specified content area.

  • Respond to all 1:1 appointment requests.
  • Provide 30 or 60 minute 1:1 tutoring appointments.
  • Enter notes into student folder after 1:1 tutoring appointments.
  • Be assigned other duties as needed.

 

Supplemental Instruction Leader (SIL): Attend class with students and hold a Supplemental Instruction (SI) session outside of class. SI session is a structured study session using collaborative learning strategies learned through the Peer Tutor training workshop. The SI session is held weekly and integrated into the students’ schedule. SILs will also be given up to 1 hour of collaboration time with their instructor for the course and given prep time to plan appropriate material for the SI session.

 

  • Attend all class meetings with students.
  • Model good student behavior by taking notes, completing readings, and participating in class.
  • Prep for SI session using collaborative learning techniques.
  • Conduct scheduled SI session outside of class time.
  • Facilitate collaborating learning during SI using strategies learned during SIL training workshop.
  • Communicate and meet weekly with instructor.
  • Attend biweekly meetings – there may be prep that will need to be done ahead of time.
  • Take attendance at every SI session and turn in hours weekly.
  • Prepare end of the semester reports as directed by Tutoring Services Coordinator.
  • Maintain a professional attitude about matters such as class standards, grades, and student complaints.
  • Model appropriate professional attitudes and behaviors to staff, students and others.
  • Be assigned other duties as needed.

 

All Tutor Responsibilities:

  • Attend mandatory paid training at the beginning of every semester.
  • Participate in ongoing training offered throughout the semester.
  • Be dedicated to checking staff email account.
  • Be dedicated to participating and utilizing the Tutoring Services E360 community.
  • Be dependable, flexible, relatable, proactive, patient, friendly, approachable, encouraging, supportive, and have a positive attitude.
  • Communicate regularly with Learning Center Coordinator and Instructor (if applicable).
  • Demonstrate commitment to service excellence standards.
  • Relate successfully with students and staff of diverse cultural, social or educational backgrounds.
  • Excel within the academic area they are tutoring in.
Qualifications

High school diploma or GED required.

 

PAL Tutors:

  • Must be comfortable with math – including Algebra.
  • Strong writing skills.
  • Technology skills – current Learning Management System (i.e. E360), Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and some Access.

Location and Campuses

Chippewa Valley Technical College (CVTC) is part of the Wisconsin Technical College System (WTCS) and serves an eleven-county area in west central Wisconsin. The largest campus is located in Eau Claire and includes a Business Education Center and Health Education Center, plus a Manufacturing Education Center at the Gateway Campus and an Emergency Service Education Center and Energy Education Center at the West Campus. CVTC has regional centers in Chippewa Falls, Menomonie, Neillsville, and River Falls. The College is one of 16 WTCS colleges located throughout the state.

Student Profile

Student enrollment exceeds 8,000 credit students per year, plus over 9,000 non-credit students, with full-time equivalents of over 4,000. The median age of credit students is 24. Approximately 68% of students receive financial aid and 44% are Pell Grant students.

Programs and Placement

CVTC offers 110 programs, 35 certificates, and customized training to an average of 140 businesses annually. CVTC has an outstanding placement rate, 95% of graduates are employed within six months of graduation, with 87% in a related field. CVTC has nationally recognized faculty and state-of-the-art facilities and equipment. Business and industry leaders serve on advisory committees and help CVTC match its curriculum to the needs of today's workplace. Courses are offered at numerous locations in traditional classroom settings, as well as online and in a variety of blended and hybrid formats.
