Job Title Assistant Professor of Emerging Media Description

The Department of Visual and Media Arts invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Emerging Media with an appointment in the Department of Visual and Media Arts. The Department seeks candidates who can contribute to the excellence and diversity of the academic community through teaching, other forms of engagement with students outside of the classroom, creative work and service activities. The appointment begins September 1, 2019 with a mandatory 2-day orientation August 22 & 23, 2019.

The Department of Visual and Media Arts is a vibrant and engaged community of artists, scholars and professionals, with over 100 full- and part-time faculty members and 1700 majors. The department offers general education courses in art history, a BA degree that includes media studies and media production tracks, a BFA in media production, a bi-coastal low-residency MFA in writing for film and television, and an MFA in film and media art.

Emerson College is the nation’s only four-year institution dedicated exclusively to majors in communication and the arts in a liberal arts context. It is located in the dynamic multi-cultural city of Boston in close proximity to cultural resources, arts institutions, and research centers. Emerson College enrolls over 4,446 graduate and undergraduate students from more than 52 countries and all 50 states.

Candidates should have an MFA in art or media, a terminal degree in a related field, or significant professional experience comparable to a terminal degree.

We welcome applications from candidates engaged in an active, high-impact creative practice focused on emerging media, such as virtual/augmented reality or 360 filmmaking. We are particularly interested in someone with a deep understanding of current and potential uses of AR/VR technology and immersive storytelling in multiple settings—art, advocacy, addressing social issues, understanding consumer behavior, education, and play. College or university teaching experience, specifically production courses in AR/VR or 3D modeling, is strongly preferred. Experience with coding languages and middleware relevant to immersive and interactive applications is also preferred. Candidates must have demonstrated ability to work effectively with faculty, students, and staff from diverse backgrounds. Experience creating work relevant to underrepresented communities is desirable.

Responsibilities will include developing and teaching introductory and advanced undergraduate and graduate level courses in AR/VR, immersive cinema, and coding for media projects. Some

courses will serve students from across the college in addition to VMA. The successful candidate will work in the School of the Arts newly constructed Emerging Media Lab and Studio and help curate the space’s use. They will also be encouraged to form collaborations across campus and throughout the community. Additional responsibilities include academic advising, student mentorship, support for admissions, and serving on department and college committees.
