Job Title Assistant Professor Theatre Education Description

The Department of Performing Arts invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Theatre Education. The Department seeks candidates who can contribute to the excellence and diversity of the academic community through ongoing engagement with students both inside and outside of the classroom in addition to traditional scholarship, creative work, teaching, and service. The appointment begins September 1, 2019 with a mandatory 2-day orientation August 22 & 23, 2019.

The Department of Performing Arts is home to one of the nation’s leading undergraduate programs in theatrical performance, design, stage management, and theatre education with 90 full- and part-time faculty members and staff and 530 students studying in nine distinct undergraduate and one graduate program. The department offers BFA degrees in Theatre, Theatre Education, Theatre Design Technology, Stage & Screen Design Technology, Stage & Production Management, Musical Theatre, Acting, Theatre & Performance, and Theatre Education & Performance; general education courses in theatre studies; and an MA degree in Theatre Education. Emerson Stage, the production organization within the department, produces eight to ten fully staged major productions annually in five theatres, with additional production opportunities available to our students through curricular projects, student theatre organizations and ArtsEmerson, the College’s professional presenting company.

Emerson College is the nation’s only four-year institution dedicated exclusively to majors in communication and the arts in a liberal arts context. It is located in the dynamic multi-cultural city of Boston in close proximity to major arts institutions, performing art venues, and research centers. The college enrolls 4,446 undergraduate and graduate students from 52 countries and all 50 states.

Qualifications: 
The ideal candidate will hold a terminal degree in Theatre Education or a related field, teaching experience within a diverse college community, and familiarity with current Massachusetts and national curriculum frameworks, theatre standards, and licensure requirements.

Candidates should have a background and college-level teaching experience in teacher training and several of the following areas: applied theatre and devised work in community environments; urban and multicultural education; drama/theatre arts curriculum design and implementation grounded in diverse traditions, pre K-12; contemporary theories of teaching/learning; authentic assessment; student teacher supervision; and contemporary national and international practices in process drama and drama-in-education.

The position includes teaching five courses per year in drama and theatre education including courses in education required for Massachusetts licensure of teachers of theatre. Courses may include Drama as Education I and II, Contemporary Issues in Education (with an emphasis on equity, inclusion, and social justice), Student Teaching Practicum and Seminar and an additional course that expands the diversity of approaches to theatre education or applied theatre.

In addition to teaching, all faculty members advise and mentor students and participate in the college’s system of shared governance. This position includes service to the theatre education program by supervising student teaching practica, assisting with the direction and administration of the undergraduate and graduate programs, participating in curriculum development, and helping to recruit new students.
